Not returning, they went'to the neighbors to seek some trace of him; but the only word got of him was from one of the neighbor's “boys, “who said hehad}, : seen George on his way home* fron the store-in an alteratiqn with Timothy Bacon,..On the. morning’ fol. lowing, two boys who were passing through the’ woods where the lad was last seem had their attention drawn to a singular mound of leaves between the bark of two trees. They went. over to it, kicked. awuy the Jeaves and earth, when ta their hopYor and amazement they saw the dead body of George Shaum. The corpse emitted afoul stench which ‘drove them back, and when they gained sufficient nerve to near it again they discovered that ‘the fave was black and blue and bloody, und presented ‘a most horrible appearance, Closer. examination revealed came forward, and in an address of = ee thes Ge eRolkeqtifoken in several places and the clothing rent and torn. Searching about the) vicitity where . the body was first found, inditations were discovered of where the murderer had at first tried to dig a grave in which to bury the victim, Near the partially made grave was found a package of medicine which young . Shaum had purchased the day before. Suspicion pointed to Timothy Bacon, and the officer found him in the barn in thé rear‘of his steptather’s house. He took the arrest with perfect indifference, and when acquainted with the charge upon which he had been taken in custody vehemently denied it. However when questioned closely by the Justice of the Peace, Fassola, he admitted striking Shaum’ with a club for his refusal in handing over the atticles he had putvhased at store. This -acknowlddgement was tegarded as enough by the. magistrate, and the prisoner was remanded to jail for further examination, From the appearance of the-dead body,” it wonld seem that young Shaum was. beaten to death with a wattle, a little hickory stick, half switch and _ half elub.
