We are led to make these remarks from the fact that thie class. ‘‘can’t see what benefit a Railroad can be. to this city,’’ and wouldn't if they eould. It would take up a great deal of our space to show the benefit already derived and the brilliant prospect for the future which has been and will be brought abovt on account of the Railroad, but we forbear, being content to let -‘croakers’” continue their sweating. > New Attraction, Every old resident remembers Nina Churchman,-now Mrs: Nina Larowe, who lived here with her parents many years ago. She is the daugh. ter of the late James Churchman. For many: years past she has resided in the State of Nevada, and of late in New York City. ' While at the latter place, after the death of her husband, she stndied for the -dramatic stage and has made quite a hit, Sheis now stoppiug with her niother at San José, nnd on the 26th of this month she will come up here with the ‘‘old settlers.” On Saturday evening, May 27th, she, in company with Miss Anna Livingston, will give an entertainment at the ‘Theatre, Nina was always a great favorite with the old resideuts, and we feel confident she will be greeted with a large audience on her appearance at the Théatre, The Last Spike. Next: Saturday afterneon at 2 o'clock, the last spike ef the railroad will be driven. Itis an important event in the history of this town, and we e<pect peuple from all parts of the county will be present to witness the ceremony. The Military and Firemen will turn out in full foree, the bells of the city will be rung, salutes will be fired,. and it will be made aday of general rejoicing. That of Prof. Norton, on Friday evening, delighted all’ who heard it, and just whetted the appe. tites of his listeners for more of the same sort. All the remarks made by the game gentleman during the Institute and on different’ subjects, were justas able and instructive as was this ene, The thought oecurred to us while listening to him, what a difference there is in men and may be ‘among teachers!’ What a_pleasure to attend school under the instruction of such a teacher.
