The Duily Transcript, . NEVADA CITY, CALIFORMA. » ~“T¥eu Bet Items. slr There is little to vary the monotony of the routine work of the mines in this camp at present. pea Sunday. May “1 6th,. 1880.The great question, who isthecoming man iw the approaching political ‘ oe See 0 ae OTTER ——= Washiagton Township. The snow has almost entirely dis“appeared from the surrounding hills, and people are rejoicing ovet the prospeets-of a stage and the possibility of aregular mail. ‘week of such weather will raise the ‘river and ptobably settle the debris question at Marysville. There still lies from 2 to 4 feet’of snow on the ridge. There is to bea force of men put on the road this week if the "weather will permit. __ The clean-up at by Mr, MtCarty-and situated about. _ ‘one mile in a north westerly direction from this place, turned out well. + “ifthe seact amount 1 have Tailed to . °achst-San-Hrancisco—-making—par—y ascertain. The rock crushed at the mill of Mr. Jno. Pattison on Quartz — —Flatdid far-better-than-was--expéct-~ ed. tt wastaken out from a shaft 12 feet deep. There is an unlimited amount of the same kind in sight, as _the vein is from 12 to 20feetin width, Another the mine owned contest, is freely discussed by the miner, the business man and the ‘gentleman of leisure.” Particularly the last. There are-very few even among the staunchest Republicans who favor the nomination of General Grant. Blaine app2ars to be the favorite among the Republicans. The: Democrats are diversified in their preferences bat will generally . gupport Tilden or any other candidate who may be nominated’ by, the Cincinati convention. Such is the political-gossip here. “Sot Labsent from town at present. B. FP. Snell of the firm of Snell & Merrow, and ©. Fox of Fox & Cloudman, are Heinsen is at the Bay seeing the . sights and purchasing a supply of . the “necessaries.” Sup. Jerry Good>+win of the English claims is also below-on-a_ business trip, host Drunzer has been making your —y¥ith-amnill-of from 10.t6-20stampa . sity hts nexitquarters during the pasty on it this mine would undoubtedly . ‘ prove one of the best. properties in ~~ this district. ee ee The Alpha Gravel Mine has. again . resumed work aftera short suspension, under the superintendsnce of “T. Perry, water having been brought through the Blue Tent Ditci. to that point, The gravel looks—exeeedingly well, and there is no question but what an unusual large clean-up this season wil reward the owners’ industry. The lite heavy snow storms have been a great set back to gravel miners in general, The gravel mine situated on, Scotchman Creek, which was pur_chased from-F. Hathaway some time since by Oarrol & Co., has been running thus far in full blast. They _ employ quite a number of men. The gold I understand is’ very coarse, which will counterbalance the’ amount of boulders they have to contend with. The main channel will soow be tapped, when a large amount of the precious metal may “be expected. This mine is daily iniproving in richness, Probably my opinionen Washington ~—~"quartz mines and their —workingswould not be amiss, The reason I give that this section of country has not been more fully developed, is ' that the quartz mines in general are held by a class of men who do little ornothing on them and hold from two toa dozen apiece. This has been the case for years. In case they sink a hole or run eight or ten . feet of a tunnel they ask for it al there is in the hill andthe surround.ing country also. I am confident that there areas good quartz mines _jn-this vicinity as ever have been . struck in the county, and it requires but very little capital and time -to ~~ prove the same. ‘This Summer there will be without a doubt mines opened which will prove my _ assertion. There are almost daily pieces of float quartz picked up which are literally covered with gold. Wheredo they ‘some from butfrom quartz ledges % My experience has taught me this much, that there is not asing’e ledge in the immediate vicinity but what there has been more or less gold taken out of it. The general opinion is that if it does not lay thick on the very surface there is nothing in it. There I differ. There is not a permanent ledge that exists but what has itschutes. It requires in some cases weeks, aye months, of toilsome work in others, but little labor. I am positive that if the mines in this district were worked as they should be, . there would bean excitement here such as has not been heird of . for years. Asitis, with those that we have we will this Summer show the oatside world what we can do in th: . sxape of quartz mining, Mr.C, Percival and E. O. Pipin have left this place for the Skagit gold fields. Yourcorrespondent will in the near future have news from them direct. Then I may enlight-n your _ readers a little on what Skagit really is. Rumor has it that a “marriage in) high life which has been long in contemplatjon is about to take. place. * MINER. “T witt take the d—~-d little Irish biackgu rd between my fingers ani hold him like thas,” sail.a pious Baptist, of Dennis Kearney, with a contemptuous gesture, man, _ : ‘Louis Voss, the lumberman, has had a force of men at work building . ‘new and repairing the old road leading from this p‘acetohis mill. He ‘spends no small amount each year in constructing and repairing his roads, as they pass over mining! ground and are often washed away by the miner. It was his iutention to have gotten to his mill with men and teams this week had not the severe storm come on. The snow is about four feet deep at his mill now. He and his men are Very anxious to get at work as the mining and agricultural outlook is suchas to promise a good lumber season. The English Co.’s claims are in full operation. A blast of 600 cases of powder was exploded in the ‘Brown’s Hill claim this week doing good execution, ‘The Hayward claims. at Chalk Bluff are:running under the skillful direction of E. Willard, foreman, and 000 to $12;000 per tonth. There is about forty more feet of grading to he performed in the new tunnel, . when it will be ready forthe flume. The dance which was to have taken place at Quaker Hill school house was postponed until the evening of Styx. <>< — The fren Clad Miac. The Iron Clad mine is situated one mile south of Rough & Ready. Under the management of Mr. Cammet it has become well-known throughout Nevada County. ‘Lhe shaft is down about 150 feet and hasa well developed and defined ledge between two and three feet wide, running north east and south west. The Company have let a contract to sink 100 feet more. They intend at the completion of the contract to run_ drifts and cut the adjoining. ledge,. which -ruas parallel with the main ledge. The rock taken.out pays for the sinking. We were shown pieces of quartz weighing between 40 and 50 Ibs_in which free gold could be quite freely seen. Chere ida five stamp mill ‘on the mine, stamps more this Sammer. There isalsoa patent furnace for roasting sulphurets. “The rock is paying $30} and $40 per ton, Mr. Cammet hasbeen at work over two yearsin developing this . mine, and has spent a great deal of moneys. andat last his efforts are-erowned with snecess. It would bea good thing for Nevada County if she had many more such men as Cammet, ~ A. B, —> Slippery **Seap.” The Carson (Nev.) Appeal of Friday says: ‘Soap’ McAlpine, the. Nevada county prize fighter, whe announced that he would fight Rodfirst Monday in May has not as yet made his appearance on the Comstock. Considering, however, that his opponent is also non est, houors faces is by no means an unpleasing feature of the affair which didn’t come off. It is said that the reason of the meeting being delayed is the failure of either party to produce backers who have the requisite coin. ’ Serra Connty News. the North Fork. : 'L.
