Dennis Desmond & Oo. have leased the mine neur the New England, whieh is known by the nime of ‘‘Mobegan,’’. The, company is composed of old miners of this city and Grass Valley. the trouble with the water and the iusbility.of the ‘former owners to put-up machinery, work was “suspended on it a long time ago. The shaft is down forty-five feet and the last rock taken out yielded $87 tothe ton. The New England mine has drained the water from the “‘Mohegan,’’ and the lessees aro go~ing abead determined to thoroughly prospect it, aud if the water troubles them they will make urrangements immediately to put up machinery. They are practical miners, and we have no doubt they will.soon be abl to demonstrate that they have a good paying mine. The right sort of spirit uow seems to actuate many in adding more pxying mines to the large number that are now iu: operation. If the work goes on as vigorously in the next few months to “eomeas ithas during the past few months, we shill soon see Nevuda GQity assume its pristine celebrity, Large Drove of Sheep. ‘Over eleven-thousand sheep passed through this city, yesterd: ay, OM their way to the mountains, They were driven up here from Fresno county. ‘It seems very strunge to us that this step was not tuken before, when it must have been known to sheep owners in the southern part of the State _ that there was abundance of food in this section of the country. Instead of allowing the sheep to die of starvation, had they been seut up here thousands and.-thousands of them might have becn saved.’ In conversation with a gentlemana few days ago, he.informed us that he came up overland from San Diego, and most of the way in company with a large sheep owner, He told our informant'that he alone would lose many thousand sheep, andin fact he had _ driven off from his ranch all he could possibly dispose of, leavivg behind thousands to starve, and he saw no way to suvethem, Our informant said, to use his own expression, ‘‘oceans.of sheep are starving in the southern part of the Siate,”’ owing to the scarcity of food. The drought down there this season is very severe _ on the ranchmen. Selby Flat School Will commence on next Monday, May 21st.
