The Mongolians prepared to goto work. at-the desigaated time, but a posse of white meg intercepted them in their attempt to commence operations, and the former were compelled tdjtake up their shovels and picks add return to their shanties, The white men say that there are a great many of themin thut vicinity who are unable to obtain enough work to provide for their families, and that they are deterwined the Chinese shall not be emp ployed in preference .to laborers from among their own ranks, A conference between the Superintentee from the white men was acreed upon by the Jatter-as_the most-reasonable way of settling the trouble; but whether it resulted-in an adjustment of the affair or not, we were not informed. It is to be hoped, at ony rate, that the difficulty may be 8-tisfuctorily arranged, so far ‘Aas conéerned, . Imp-ovements at the Murchie Mine. : The Murchie, which bas for-some time now occupied a prominent position a8 one of the leading mines of Nevada County, is by the addition of frequeut important impvovethat his victims would advance, the startling development was made that “humbug” was written alt over _the invention.. Now. we are called fecuunt of avother ‘motor’ which proposes to tike the place of steam. 4 As might be expected, u ‘‘ssientific’” _ oxplupation-ia given_of the. working . of this new candidate for attention, ‘but such was also the case with Keeloy’s patent. From accounts giveu of this latest wonder we learn that a number of gentlemen. assembled atthe Risdon Iron Works, in San Hranciscv, on Tuesday, by invitanew application of @ well known cently patented in Cuannda and the United States by Mr. Thomas M. Fell, Known aa ‘The Carbon Motor,”’ ‘there were present a large nuniber “of skilled mechanics and experienced scientific men, The test was a very satisfactory one; but-the most-experienced eugineers, while admitting they were astonisbed at the working, tigation, feeling Confident that a great discovery.in motive power had -beun arrived at. The priacipie is nota new one, Bisulpbide of caryon (or liquid carbon) has been used in steam boilers before, but in connection with water. Theré were several steamers in the Freneh marine to which the principle wus applied, but the difficulty to be overcome was tae rapid corrosion of the boiler and pipes. What is claimed in the present case is, that this dithqculty ie avoided by the use of glycer‘ine instead of water. Pure glycerine is the best lubricatot in the world, though not an oil, and therefore neither incrustation nor corrosion follows its use. The glycarine lies ia the boiler like a bath, so to speak, and at 190 degrees, or less of temperutare, the liquid carbon is injeated therein, becomes vaporized, and almost instantly trom said heat is ob“pressure for theengine. After wtilizing the liquid carbon to prope? the engine, the. vapor is condensed for . re-use, there being no loss if the mechanical parts are tight aod the liquids pure. The great advantage gained, so far as could be peretived, were, first @ saving in expense of tuel, asin-a—comparative-trial-with an engine ran by steam, the glycers ine varkgn machine obtained greater power during eight hours of motion, and at aless consumption of coal by 56 per cent; second, an absency of wastage, by corrosion or otherwise, in the engive; third, ease of matage-Toake war on a certain rvilroad inment; and fourth, perfect freedom from. the danger of explosion. It was @ curious feeling to be able to place one’s bund on a boiler when the niachinery was at speed, and find the superficial beut, in parts, only about 200 degrees. Whether Mr. Fell bas a practic Linvention or not, however, wny be still reasonably sbted,.iv spite of the sat.sfectory Moulton Not Afraid of a Libal Sait. the best feature of all-is that the owners are amply repsid for their efforts in eularging operations. A double track is being laid from the hoisting works to the mill, by mesus of which” the vast amount’ of Jabor) beretofore ased in hauling qyaitz will be dispeused witb, aod cars wilt be-used for the purpose of trans} ‘portation, A new boiler has been procured for the hoisting works, and it is being put in-place at present. The mill is to be also shortly provided with a powerful new engine. Going to the Black Hills. Palmer Smith, ex-Connty Surveyor, returned from the Bay on Wednesday night, and on Tuesday next will take his final departure from this city, going to~ Deadwood city, Dakota-Territory,-where he will be engaged in making surveys and estimates upon certain diteh property for a San Francisco.com pany ot wellknown capitalists. Of course there are any amount of red-skins engaged in war’ like operations among the Black Hills, but our young friend incvends to provide against any unpleasant emergencies by having his hair cut very short, and transforming himself into a perambulating arsenal. Here’s to a-sugcessful future in bis new home, ; Ss. From the Regular Army. Gen. Aug. V. Kaut, of the regular army, wasin this city on Wednesday. He is interested in the Murchie mine, and stopped here, having just come from the East, and was on his way toSan Francisco: He express ed himself as highly delighted with the beauties of our mountain town and surrounding scenery. He felt fully repaid for his trip after steing the splendid guild producing mines of the Marchie Mining Company.— While here he visited the Armory of the Nevada Light Guard, and after@careful examination of the arms, &c, he said everything betokened an interest on the part of the officers and meinbers, that would rank them as 8 first-ciass company, Reporter of the Washington (D.
