THURSDAY MORNING, MAY 18.
TUNNELING BY Fine.—We recently gave
‘the favorable results of experiments in work‘ing rock by fire in the ‘bed-rock_ tunnel in
the claims of Mr. Clark, at Smartevitie—
Since that time we have heard of miners
that in such, cases it was more expensive
rock is hard and worked with great difficulty, as shown by Mr. Clark’s experiment, fire
ig far ‘superior toany-other-agent;-saving
one-third in time and more than half in expense. Tho method of breaking. rock by
fire was used in ancient times in the Hartz
mineé in Germany, but in consequence of
«he high price of wood it was abandoned for
gunpowder, but recently the old-method-has.
been revived, miners using coke insteadof
wood. The following is the process: [Ina
portable furnace about one-and a half busbols of coke are placed. The fire is kindled
at 5 o'clock, Pp. M., and kept up witil 5
o'clock the next morning, when the furnaee
is-removed and the rock left to cool after
being sprinkled with—-water. About “noon
the face of the rock spontaneously detaches
itself, and then a further portion is easily
broken. The effect of the fire extends about
‘eight inches and, according to the Scientific
American, with one and a half bushels of
hundred weight of ore is’ obtained at’ balf
the cost of the gunpowder process. It is
said that by this method the hardest rock is
worked to better advantage than <éofter
kinds. In the Smartaville claims bard slate
rock was worked and no furnace was used.
The wood, about a cord, waa/placed against
the fuce of the rock and allowed to burn out.
Neither was water-used/” We have no doubt
that with properly constructed furnaces, so
arranged as to be easily moved upon a car,
‘the effect produced in Clark’s claims can be
doubled.
