"pany has appealed to the.Snpreme © We long since knew that Stanford renin . by one of the prineipal leaders of the . . to Mr. Dawes, remarks that Mr. “ a The D ily Transit NEVADA A CITY, cAL. : NR TCT EE SATO TTT Pn at Saturday, May 18, 1872. 7s > FOR PRESIDENT, ‘GENERAL U. 8. GRANT. tSabjcct to the decision of thé National R:publitah Convention. } The Railroad Taxes. Thé Central Pacific Railroad ComCourt of the United States in the tax . case recently decided against ‘the . ‘Company in the Supreme Court. of / this State. Thbe-ground of appeal is . that the property of the Company is exempt, because it is a postal and military road $f the Government:-— .& Co. claimed everything in reach, but we had no idea that the grasping ex-Gb¥ernor would ¢laim te be.the -original Uncle Sam. M-the Supreme-Court of the United States should decide that the railroad is, Natzonal preperty, and that therefore the State cannot tax it, the _people will demand that the Govern-. ment take itfrom Stanford & Co.,and run it for the benefit of the people. Thé meanness of this Compuny is . co manifest by their efforts to escape ‘their just share of taxation. In order to do so, they are willing to awear that they do not own the road, and ‘that it is Government property. We do not believe that they have any faith in the 3 raised on appeal, but the ly desire by delay, and put_Aing the taxpayers to as much ex"pense as possible; to prevent a just ‘taxation of their property this year, asthey have suceeeded in doing here* {ofore. The game won’t win. The people will demand that Stanford & “Co. beat their full share of the burdens imposed by taxation. No dodging or denial of oWnership in the road will do. The Railrodd Company must be made te’come to time. “Any Thing to Beat Grant. Mr. Beck, one of the Democrutic leaders in the House of Representatives, lately made one of the charges: against the honesty of the Administration which are now the chief cry ‘of the alliance against the Republivan-party._Mr. Beck's eliarge is a good illustration of the kind of warfere that is waged upon the President. It was as follows: “During the last fiscal year, in: detiance of that law [uct of July 12, 1870], the War Departmént, as is shown by the report of the Secretary of the Treasury, expended $8,000,000 in excess of the appropriations, ‘and seld arms to the French to make good the deficiency; and the proceeds of those arms are new deposited in the ‘Treasury to the credit of that Department, subject to be drawn out by 1t.”” The Secretary of War, in a letter Beck isin error at all points, and proceeds in the tersest aud most conelusive ' mafifiet fo prove it. The War Department did not expend any sums in excess of appropriation; it did not sell arms to make good the deficiency; the money to ‘the credit of erdpanee stores could not be used to make it good; the:proceeds of the sales mentioned are notin the Treasury to the credit of the War Depart ment, nor subject to ita order. The fHecretary leaves little of Mr. Beck. Mr. Fernando Wood made-an at-. tack ef the usual kind upon General Dyer, Chief of the Ordnance Department,to which the General replied in . a letter so conclusive that Mr, Nook retracted his charges. It is by the inebidhyit-Feteration of such charges that’ the campaign is conducted.of any thing andany body tu Grant. > _ ‘Tux -washerwomen of Washington are organizing a protective society, and preparing to employ a legal adviser. The dastardly plan succeeded most comipletely; because but few of the delegates besides Greeley’s frietidshad any idea of what was sesiepest and in progress.”’ The same paper says: “Neither Greeley nor Grant can receive the support of the German Americas, that is beyond all doubt. The undeserved abuse of Carl Schurz, which he received at the hands of Greeley and Brown men and the political traders, has produced an indignation that will make itself felt in the coming election campaign. The opinion is general that Greeley will ttiuthph over Grant in the Philadelphia Convention by the sdthe’ means that he did here, or else withdraw in Grant’s faver.” There are many Liberals who went into the convention as Republicans, and who came out firmly resolved to cut loose from that party. Greeley, the enthusiast, who flies from one extreme to the other; the temperance fanatic and preposterous moral preacher, the unreliable politician, »is, notwithstanding his acknowledged» personal honesty, not by any meas the ihan te fill the’ Presidency of the Unitéd States in these days of storms and danger. This is evident to all to whom it imports much more than the old slime should be cleansed from our politics, than that the system of protection and the interests of the monopolists should he more thoroughly grounded by his election. But what is still more worthy of,consideration is the recklessness and the shamelesshess, in regard tothe new. movement itself, of the manner in which his nomination was effected. Throughouttlie whole West thd Greeley ticket. will be repudiated with scorn and indignation. tsi Bb A Representation Party. On Thursday last, Mrs. 8.
