Gold Bank Company. * — {San Franc'sco-Oa'l.],-. ; ‘The ‘activity of quartz and drift the past year has New claims have been opened, and old ones worked vith greater vigor with the aid of better appliances. Improved methods have been applied to abandoned ground with good results, and engineering skill has been directed to schemes for gold. « the mos ‘important is the project of a drainage tunnel to tap what is known as the Gold Bank ‘group of mines in Nevada county. The ‘proposition is to rufi a tunnel from the Yuba river to a point near the Idaho mine, adistance of over four miles, with. the view of draining the different mines thus tapped, and of working them to a greater depth at decreased expens-. es. During 35 years more than 100 millions in gold has been takén Out Of the “upper workings in these mines. None of the principal producers of the group has been worked to any great depth but many excellent prospects have been left untouched-because of the expense of the machinery requir‘ed. The proposed tunnel will underrun the deepest workings of every inine on the route, affording the opportunity for deep prospecting and.cheap drainage and_operation. There are upward of 120 known ledges and claims on the . belt. to ‘be tapped by the main tunnel and its <branches, and others may be struck. The old theory that no purely gold quartz mine would pay at a greater depth than 300 or 400 feet has been abandoned, and itis now known that ledges may con500 feet. It is the opinion of practical miners, familiar with that part of the country, that the work done on the upper levels of these mines has not half exhausted the mineral resources of the strip of ground-in question; and that the tunnel“will Yevolutionize the quartz mining industry of the district. It is expected that work A BUNCH OF BONES. Remains of a Dead Man Found ov Aristo¢racy Hill. . Yesterday afternoon, while engaged in digging the trench for the new water-pipe on Aristocracy Hill, the men made a ghastly discovery. Just in front of George E. Turner’s place of residencejand. about three feet below the street’ surface, they came upon a human skeleton in a sitting position, leaning alittle .to the left, with the knees drawn up tothe chin. There were the decayed remains of some clothing, but nothing to indicate thata coffin or box had been used atthe burial. The skeleton was evidently that . Of.a large man, and the appearance of the teeth indicated advanced age. City Trustee Locklin. made acareful examination of the, remains, as soOn as they were exhamed, and decided at once that they were what was left of an individual of Ethiopian descent, a peculiar crook in the shin-bones impressing him with this notion. The old: pipe extended along within five or six inches of the skeleton’s toes, and J. B. Ducray who helped to lay that old pipe 25 years ago, and is engaged in ‘assisting toe, put.downm the new one, is morally certain that the skeleton has lain there more than a quarter of a century. L. O. Palmer says he is positive no one has been buried there within the past thirty years, as he has lived in that vicinity all that time. Change of Management. ee J. H. Bolles has-resigned the Presidency of the Excelsior Water and {Mining Company of Smartsville. H.,B. It ‘is his intention to construct a number of irrigating canals to convey the water to the plains below Smartsville, thus taking that section one of the’ most prosperous in the State. He intends to start the flouring mulls of the Company and endeavor to supply the merchants of Sierra and Nevada counties with mi! stuff. The Nevada City J uvenile Dramatic Combination scored a great success on Wednesday evening, which was the occasion of their first appearance in public. BP DeNoon, who has ‘a lease of the old Derbec tunnel, is doing preparatory work, and will soon have a full crew breasting out gravel. The Last Chance Company have at last reached the bedrock, and expect to strike gravel within the next few feet. The Delhi mine, at Grizzly Ridge, is running 30 tons of ore daily through their 8 stamp mill. The ledge is tapped by a tunnel, and there being no hoisting or pumpng to be done, the ore is mined and milled at a small cost. Ore of the value of $2.50 a ton can be worked at a profit. The ledge ranges in width from 8to 16 feet and being of a soft nature is very friable and easily reduced. A tunnel is being run to tap the ledge at alow depth, and where good backs can be obtained. Near Columbia Hill there are many quartz ledges which need only exploitation and some capital te commence operations to develop large mines. The Milton Company is prospecting for drift gravel near Cherokee, and from present indications will soon have enough ground opened to require a large force of men. The large ledges between San Juan and Sweetland are attracting attention, and considerable work towards development is being not been opened to any considerable depth. >> — —-—-——‘Died Suddenly. ee nouncing the sudden death o ter-General of Canada. author of the well-known political novel éntitled ‘‘Prof. Conant.” Two or three years ago he visited his relatives at this city and during his stay made many warm friends among our citizens. From the tables of position published by the Berlin Observatory, . ! it seemed probable that at the time of greatest brilliancy, during the first week in May, both comets would be visible to the naked eye, high up in the northwest and early in the evening. They have, however, failed to realize these anticipations ; they certainly have not become the promised ‘“‘conspicuous objects,’’ and it is, indeed, extremely doubtful whether they have anywhere been seen without the aid of a telescope. Unless there should be some sudden and unexpected increase of brilliancy during this week, Loth Comet Fabry and Comet Barnard/1 will simply add two new names to the long list of telescopic comets.
