The locations made in the Sacramento Valley mining district near

latter direction. It would be well
for the ditch owners and property
holders of the several counties that
contain this class of mining ground,
to look. well to their interest in this

does not take place. As to buying
the valuable mining ground that is

the ballot is not valucd very highly

Facts About the Chinese Bill.
‘The bill for theexclusion of the Chinese passed the Senate Friday by a
vote of 22 Democrats, 9 Republicans
and David Davis, President, pro tem.
‘. voting for it. The nine Republicans
were Cameron of Wisconsin, Chilcott
and Hill, the two Senators from Colorado, Hale of Maine, Jones of Nevada, Miller of California, Miiler of
New York, and Saunders and Vaa
Wyck. of Nebraska. All the Republican Senators of what may be called
the far West favored the bill. There
is also the scattering vote of three—
one from Wisconsin, one from New
England and one from. New York.
This indicates the advance of the
idea eastwards. All the Democratic
Senators from the West ard most of
those from the South voted for the
bill.
Of the fifteen votesin the negative,
eleven were furnished by New England—and all of its Senators but one.

entertained in relation to it, was
very trying to the Presidential aspirants. David Davis sat down on . ,
all the preliminary stages, but finally
voted forit. Edmunds spoiled a fine
réputation by his foolish effort to
carry water on both shoulders: John
Sherman concluded tu go with his
section. . Perhaps he has no further
Presidential ambition. The bill thus
passed differs from the vetoed bill in
four particulars: (1) ft reduces the
term of exclusion to 10 years; (2) it
authorizes the President instead of Weed) Laila.
the Collectors of Customs to remove ‘a iia boneion
contraband Chinamen; (3) it provides Annie Day, Placerville, Cal.
that the registration of outgoing J. 8. Holbrook, P. M.
Chinese shall be made on ship board
instead of at the Custom House; snd
(4) itcatls the evidences necessary
for the identification of the privileged
classes of Chinamen, that is to say;
teachers (whatever they may be)students, traders and travelers, ‘‘certificates,” instead of ‘‘passports.”
