Narrow Escare.—On Saturtday last,
Walter, son of Dr. C. M. Bates, formerly of this city, fell from a building in
San Francisco, and narrowly escaped
death. Walter, who is about eight:
years old, climbed from a window in
building for the purpose of flying his
kite. “Workmen were engaged in fix.

loose planks: “Walter stepped backward off a ‘plank and fell to’ the floor,
and was about falling through to the
next floor when caught by a workman.
He was taken up in an insensible condition. His left arm was broken near
the shoulder, and he was also injured
about the head aiid legs. His ‘injuries
were not of a very dangerous character,
aad on Monday he was improving.
THE. Exnisrrion.—The exhibition
for the benefit of the Library Fund of
the Methodist Sunday School, will take
place at the Theatre to-morrow evening. The exercises by the pupils,
consisting of Choruses, Solos, Songs,
Declamations, Dialogues and Tableaux,
will be exceedingly interesting to all
who attend. The Theatre should: be
wded and every encouragement
shod be given the children. Aside
from contributing to a-werthy object, .
the exhibition will be well worth the
price of admission. Doors will be openedat 7 c’clock and the exercises will
commence promptly at.a quarter before
8 o'clock, Chase’s band has volanteered to furnish music for the oceasion.
A Letrer Box.—A Post Office let.
ter box has been put up by Postmaster
(iuild at the National Exchange for
the convenience of those who have letters to send and do not wish fo go to
the post office. The letters dropped in
the box will be taken out every night
at 8 o'clock when the mails are put up
for below. Those in need of stamps can
always find them at Coffman’s cigar
store. Another box will be put upina
day or two on Pine street. These letter boxes will be a great convenience
to the people.
INSANE.—Mrs. Margaret Knight, of
Grass Valley, was yesterday brought up
by Officer Walker, and examined upon the charge of insanity. She was
attacked within a year past with a
mania for burning everything that
came in her way, and recently her malady has so increased that it is dangerous for her to be at large. She was
examined by Drs. Hunt & Cummings
before Judge Niles, and an order was
made to send her to Stockton.
MaRBLE Works.—S. H. Jackson, late
of the firm of Devine & Co., San Francisco, proposes to start an establishment
at W. C, Pope’s furniture store, Grass
Valley. Heis prepared toreceive orders
from any part of the county to erect
monuments, furnish iron fences, build
stone walls for graves, and in fact, contract to fix up any cemetery lot to suit
any taste, ata lower rate than can be
done by any one else. . He has specimens of monuments which can be seen
on application.

in a few days will receive the largest
