i i Daly Treg Nevada City, Novada County; FRIDAY, MAY 22, 1885. . BRILLIANT SAN FRANCISCO. prosperity, which were offered to San Francisco and insultingly reSan Francisco is enjoying a trade of about $3,000,000 annually with the Sandwich ‘Islands, by means of the reciprocity treaty. So its newspapers clamor to abrogate the treaty, or else keep silent, declining to defend the treaty that gives some life to its wharves and workshops. Hydraulic mining gave San Francisco a.steady stream of. gold in exchange for goods. of $1,200,000 per month, with the prospect .of indefinite continuance. Some hundred thousand souls depended on this industry—miners, farmers, shop-keepers, and others of the mountains. Some two or three score of ranchmen,on the rivers,on unfertile lands, found that parts of their lands which were subject to annual overflow retained a residuum of “‘slickens’”’ when the accustomed waters fell—a_ result likely to occur from the natural wash if the mountains were plowed for agriculture, fully as much as when plowed by.’ the._hydraulic monitor. A decaying old town called Marysville, which was long -.-ago.deserted by its best inhabitants, had been originally located in a depression at the junction of ‘ two rivers, because it was easier to roll barrels up alow bank than up ahigh one, This miserable old ‘town, which has not had for a dozen years half the vitality of a good, healthy mountain village, added its complaint to that of the scattered ranchers, and fought viciously gne of the noblest industries of the State, seeking to destroy “the prosperity of the whole mountain region. “In such a battle what did San Francisco do? Its papers, such as the Call, Bulletin and Chronicle, ~ assumed that California was in danger of being destroyed as an agricultural State, when the fact was that if all the land ever likely to be affected by debris should re_ main forever uncultivated the State would never know the differ‘ence. The more this fact was shown, the more the press dogs of San Francisco howled. They. assumed that the water ways of the State were being destroyed. ‘‘Oh, " no,’? said Professor Pierce and the Coast Survey, ‘‘that is not at all true.”’” But the shriekers were not tobe convinced. The ‘miners -offered to put in dams to stop sediment. ‘No, no dams,” said San Francisco; ‘‘stop your hydraulic ining utterly.”” The courts lisi pars. &y this, the loudest: voice, and tightened their rulings, one after andther, until now a man who does anything towards _utilizing the’ great gold fields of this BEE the most honoravis UP wT i the State; who does what, if encouraged, would bring back busi ’ and to San Francisco, is hauled. to ' jail as a felon, with the approving plaudits of the San Francisco press _ blind leaders of the blind.. ~We do not wonder that hard times have marked San Francisco for their own.
