Nevada county should follow the exA display of our agriculPeople that Would Not Be Tolerated In Some Communities. Tho rapid settling up and improvement of Southern California. +.has been the wonder of the world and the envy of all other parts of the State. Itis a region of rich soil and pleasant climate, but the soil is no richer rhan it is here in Nevada county, and as for. climates there is none that surpasses ours, Some people can’t understand why one part of the State should so far outstrip in gain of population and consequent development of resources, all othér parts. Any one that has been to Los Angeles of late years know why it He no more gets within the gates of the city than the people of it begin to tell him what a good place itis. He doesn’t see any evidences of superiority at first -. glance, but.. disliking to appear rude nods assent. Then some more of the town people take him by the sleeve and escort him around to the various public and private buildings, cracking them up as the finest to be found on the coast—which they are not— and as commanding rents that are so high as to require a mighty long purse to reach them—which latter is too true as the tenants find to their scrrow when the first of the month rolls around. The folks down there never lose an opportunity to “‘ta‘k up’ their country and its resources to every stranger, and the man who can ‘stay around there a week and not get filled clear up to his ears with enthusiasm must be made of something besides flesh and bones, Let a Los Angeles or Riverside or San Diego man begin to croak ‘when a visitor asks him what the outlook is for the future of his town or county, and his neighbors would give him about a half a day to change his place of residence. Ifhe refused to go, and kept on croaking, they would mob him. Gentle reader, say a good word for your town and county whenever an opportunity presents itself. Moretowng. die for want of confidence and public spirit among their own citizens than from opposition and rivalry onthe outside. When a man is in search of a home and finds everybody brim full of hope and enthusiasm over the prospects of the place, earnestly working to build up its different enterprises, he becumes fully imbued with the same spirit, and a8 a result sticks his stakes and goes to work himself with some interest. When, however, he goes to a place and hears men ex~ pressing doubts and apprehensions as to the outlook, and go moping about in mournful complaints of imaginary evils which y. may be likely to befall the place, he naturally feels that it is no place for him and shakes the dust from off his feet, while he pulls with all possible speed to some other locality, A Readable Number. Frank Leslie’s popular monthly for June, 1886, opens with a very vivid sketch of the statesman who at this moment rivete public attention — William’ Ewart Gladstone—grappling boldly with a prob'em whith for a century has taxed the intellectual powers of the leading men in power in England—a government for Ireland which shall insure the well-being of the people, and retain the island as a contented part of the British Empire. -A. We understand that. at the last session o! the Yuba county Board of Supervisors George Ohleyer of the Sutter Farmer presented .a bill for $300, that amount being onefifth his expenses of his recent trip to Washington. Bills for the samé amount were presented to Sutter, Colusa, Sacramento and Yolo counties. Dr. C. E. Stone, the new Supervisor of Yuba, whoa has outlined a policy to refuse to: allow any claims which are not légal, would not vote with the other anti-slickens members to rob the tax-payers, which created some dissatisfaction with the ring ; but the masses of the people of Marysville endorse his course. Stone was bitterly denounced by the Appeal and the Sexey management, when his friends _presented bis name to the \ Governor for the appointment. It is stated by reliable authority that Sexey’s occupation is gone. The farmers of Sutter and Yuba positively refuse to} subscribe any more money for the prosecution of’ debris suits. The only source of revenue is the county treasury, and at.the last session of the Board Taxpayers in Marysville and the valley are now beginning to realize that the management made a hands with the mines to obtain the $200,000 appropriated by Congress. “After years of litigation,’ say the grangers, we have enjoined the mines, lost our trade and raised taxes to such a figure that they are almost unbearable.’? The sentiments of the people down there are rapidly changing. Brother Ohleyer’s trip East to visit his relatives at the expense of Yuba, Sutter, Colusa, Yolo and Sacramento counties, has proved of no avail. We hear that C, E. Sexey, who has. fought for many years for glory in the anti-debris cause, is disposing of his property in Marysville, having sold an entire block of land to the county for $250. Take the Woolen and Buckeye Mills from Marysville, and it will not compare with the poorest miring town in the mountains. Pasteur’s Picture, Messrs.
