SUNDAY, MAY 21, 1871. ae The'State Convention. — The State Republican Convention has been called to meet at Sacramento on the 28th day of June. Both parties are now organizing for the contest, and it seems to be the desire among Republican that a ticket, unexceptionable should be placed in nomination. With such a ticket, the party can enter the field confident of success. There is among the masses of Republicans every where, a_deep interest felt in the contest. In the last campaign many were indifferent-and remained away from the polls or voted the Dem~ ocratic ticket,in the hope that a change of administration would be an im‘provement. The work of the last Legs islature and the course of the Demox cratic administration has caused such deeply to regret the dissention of party, and there is a determination now to’ make amends by entering the cams paign for an earnest fight under the old flag of Republicanism. There is no disposition to engage in factional contests for the nomination of favorites, but .a general desire to nominate as candidates the very best men for State and county offices. In,the interior, and. we believe in the State, Booth is undoubtedly the favorite among the masses of the people for the Governorship, and he will in all probability receive the nominoation, For other State officers, at least —in Nevada county, no—preference has been expressed, In this Second District Sargent is the most popular man for Congress, and in Nevada county he will bave no epposition. For county officers a number df good mien have been named, and we have heretofore given them in ‘there columns. Others will undoubtedly be announced after the call is issued for the Convention, and for State and county officers we shall have a number of goud men to select from. ‘ Let'the Republicans throughout the county buckle on the armor and get ready for the contest. A sound plattorm, good candidates and untiring effort will result in triumph of the party in the coming election. Bepublican State Convention. A report to the Massachusetts Legislas ture states that, in following the devious course of a river valley with the narrow gauge, it would be almost always. possible to adopt planes nearly paratiel to the stream, and to go round {Texentrant projections which, would have to be cut through at whatever costif the common gauge were used. It also states that in Massachusetts brancl-railways with the. narrow gauge tay be built and equipped for one third of what they would cost with the common. gauge, and in the level districts for about one half. Canada 400 miles of three feet six inch es railway projected, and about 150 miles of the same are now under cons otis ee County Convention. tract, about 15 being in operation.N There is a narrow gauge road in Pruss sia, the engines of which weigh 154 tons and haul 86 cars, each loaded The cost of the line per mile, including roliing stock, has been. ahont $8,000.. Other similar. roads are in successful operation in Russia, Norway and South America. In Australia 250 miles of the three feet six ioch gauge are built, and 250. more projected. So far reports and experi ence show that this class of railroad works well practically and is -economcircles of the East. astern. THE extraordinary time made by the Stanford horse in Sacramento is exciting some comment among the sporting. The New York Standard.of the 111h-instant says Mr; Bonner, in an allusion to a California horse who has been spoken of as a vandidate for the honor.of. beating the time of his flyer Dexter, shows that J ; : the Pacific colt must do considerably Chas. The efficacy of Hostetter’s Celebrated Stomach Bifters ag a rpecific for recruiting the enfeebled body and cheering the desponding mind has passed into a proverb.
