Shaw, editor of the P Life, who was in this city last week, writesto his paper as follows: ‘‘The equipment of the Nevada Qity Fire Department is nut excelled by that o! avy similar orgauigation in any town of the ‘same size onthe Puci oc Slope. The town is well supplied with fire bydranis, and to throw a stream over the highest building in the place.. The depuartment ‘consists of two companies: Pennsylvania Engine Company, No. Q, and Nevada Hose Company, No. 1. Both occupy substantiul two story brick buildings owned by them, the former on .Broad street apd tbe latter on Main street, . Frank E.lerman, an enthusiastic firema., is foreman of Penusylvania Engine Company. The roll of membership contains forty names. ‘The apparatas consists of a hose cart and jumper, with 600 feet of leather and 400 feet of canvas Hose. Mr. Chris. Naffziger is foreman of Nevuds Hose, No.1. This company bas twenty“pix members. Under sathority of a resolution of. ‘the.Board of Supervisors, Coutty Surveyor, Pulmer Smith, bas just new county road from Grass Vulley to Sweetland; and Mr. H.8. Bredley has ubout completed the survey of the Nevada braoch of the same road, The-survey follows the general route surveyed by Chief Engineer Bates lust, season, ©-Mr. Smith reports the route ss an-excellent one in every respect —as to grade, muterinl aud cost—and that a road built. on this will possess very superior advantages for freight and travel. The distance from Grass V+ lley to San Juan, by the survey, i615 miles, and from Nevada to San Jaap 13% inches to the rod, with the excer~ tion of a short distance on this side of.the Yuba, which rises to 14 inches. From Deer Creek to the Junction, beyond Newtown, the grade varies from three to six inches to the rod, apparently neayly level; avd frow Shady Creek to Sweetiand the same character of grades. -"Pe-estimates—bavenot-beon fully give the~-Rev. The above estimates are for a first claes road, 16 feet in width, with all necessary dilches, culverts, etc, We suppose the est mates will be fully made up in a few duya, and the reporta of Surveyors be—ready for ors, Wedonot know whether the Board means to‘take inimediate . action on the reports, but an extra session is certuinly desirable if the work . is to-be undertaken this season. The Summer is not the best time for doing earthwork, but the rock work can be done at any season of the year, With énergetic work tbis road could be construcied inside of four montkis. The survey of the Bloomfield road has not been ordered, but there is no necessity of delaying action -on the San Juan road, as.it is the desire of the Grass Valley and Nevada communities that this road should be constructed at once.— Union. Machinery. Si, Whiting has taken a contract to carry a large lot of machinery from Grass. Valley to: the Watt Gravel Mining Co's. clainfs, near Moore’s Flat.;-He had his wagons louded up on Saturday, and will land it on the claims in a few days. When the machinery is put up work will be rapidly pushed abead,’ and then we may s00n expect ‘to hear some good news from there. The prospect the company has in striking the channel very rich is exceedingly flattering. Sad Death. Miss Virginia Dulac, aged 14 years, died in this city, ‘on Sunday night ‘lust, She was a very promisgng and lovely girl and her death will be sincerely regretted by all who knew her.
