~The Nevada Daily Transcript. _..Published Daily, Mondays ‘icnapead,. . BROWN & CALKINS. “PHURSDAY, MAY 22, 1884, EE Or the 820 delegates who will compose the National Republican Convention, the Southern States wil! have 300, the Northern States 502; the Territories aud District of Colambia, 18. The geographical divisions of the North will be represented as follows: New England, 76 delegates; Middle States, 156; Western States, 270, It will require 411 votes to nominate. The preponderating power attained by the great West is seen in the figures above. The Western States have more votes by 38 than they New England and Middle States combined, And the _ + disproportion _ is growing greater year by year, as westward the star of empire continues to scoot. : “Marx Twain” is a member of the Rev. Mr. Twichell’s church in Hartford, and so was the late exGovernor Marshall Jewell. But the ex-Gevernor was “higher up” in the church, as the himorist expressed it, and used to. pass around the plate. Oue day Mark Twain said to the ex-Governor, ‘‘See here,. Governor, they let you collect the donations, butthey never would let me do it.” ‘O yes they would,” said the e-Governor, adding, ‘‘that is, with a bell-punch.” Tue San Jose Mercury expects that there will be a great deal of fun at the Democratic State Convention. } i From present indications the meeting will be anything but a love-feast. There will be crimination and reerimination, and very likely the argaments bf cuspidors and table-legs will be brought to bear upon questions now agitating the Democratic ‘breast. The leaders of the great unwashed are in a terrible muddle. Ir in charged that the handful of the Republican members of the Legislature controlled the two-third Democratic majority at the Extra Secsion, The Appeal thinks this is giving the Republicans great credit for ability and sagacity. It is too much, Itislame, Ifan army of 2,000 soldiers were defeated by 200 of the enemy, we do not think that the 2,000 would be excused because they said they were defeated.
