SS -~ a] LOCAL ITEMS. e Concert. , oi ae Thursday evening of this week, Phillip Phillips will give a concert at the Congregational Church in this city. He will be ‘worth hearing. The Richmond Whig, spéaking of his concert, says: “As high as public expectation had been raised in regard to Mr. Phillip Phillips as a vocalist, by the notices of the British and American press, we are not guilty of exaggeration when we say that he more than metit last night, on the occasion of his concert at Broad street church. He has a sweetness and compass of voice that make the simplest song, when sung by him,brimfu. of melody. We advise every one ot our readers never to miss an opportuaity cf hearing him, for it is not oiten in a life time that sach a musical treat comes in our Way. Septenced. By Mallen and Patrick Lanagan were yesterday sentenced to four years eich in the State Penitentiary for thea crime of highway robbery. The former was tried. and convicted, and the latter, an avtcomplice, pleaded guilty. The crime was committed on Mill street, near Bosworth’s corner, in the town of Grass Valley. Immediately after the robbery the parties who were robbed followed Mullen and Lanagan into town and pointed. them out to the officers, They also recognized them at the time of the robbery, and the testimony as to the identity was most pos~ itive. They will be taken to San Quentin to-day. : Advertised Letters. The following is the list of advertised letters in the Post Office of this city, for the week ending. Monday, May 22d, 1871. Ne the following persons, all natives of England, were made citizens of the United States in the County Court yesterday: Andrew Steele, Nathaniel Dawes, Isauc Berkla and Thomas Bice. Prospecting. A prospecting party of five or six is being made up in this city fora prospecting tour through Wyoming. The leader of the party has been there, and says he can conduct his friends to very rich mines, Empty Jail. , The yunty Jail of this county is, for the first time since its completion, without an occupant—or will be when Mullen and Lanagan, now under sen~ tence, leave for San Quentin.
