WUESDAY. MORNING, MAY 24th. City and County Official Press _ Eastenw News.—The relative position of Grant and Lee has hot been materially changed in,the last few days. On Wednesday last, the sixth corps supported: by Hancock . roside, advanced against the enemy's. works. After taking the rife pite of the “rebels, our troepe retired. An attack was made by the enemy un Burnside'aleft: Our] guns. -The action of Wednesday gave Grant an advantageous position on Lee‘s right.— On the 19th, Lee made an effort to get to the . Uniou sapply trains, by sending a division under Rhodes around Grant's extreme left. They reached the Fredericksbu:g road, when they were met by Tyler, anddriven off in confusion. A farge number of the rebels were taken prisoners: On the 20th they withdrew from their. position under cover of darkness. Grant teeimed h‘s old “position on the 20th. It is thought Lee will retire to fortifications southwest of those around Spottsylvania. This movement is necessitated by the seizure of Guiney’s Stas ‘tion by Grant. To this point the rebels have been bringing supplies from Bowling Green, their depot. Butler occupies a position _within his entrenchments. Sherinan is still advancing into the heart of Georgia, He occupied Kingston on the 18th, and Gen. Davis has taken Rome. It ia atated that Johnstun’s army was overtaken ___ by Hooker and Howard, several miles west. ff Kingston. A Key West correspondent states that Tampa Bay had been captured. The troops stationed there had le(t to reinforce Lee. A dispatch, from Gauley’s bridge, West "Virginia, gives-an account of-a brilliant_vie_ tory gained by Averill on the 18th of May.— Averil] reached a point four miles from Mel_ville, where he encountered the enemy four thousand strong, under Sam Jones, The fight lasted four houre, Averil driving them baek, killing and-wounding many, and cap-uring a number of prisoners:.The -rebels res treated under cover of darkness. Our loss was one hundred andtwenty. Averill then effectually destroyed the railroad from. thence to a point four miles east of Christianburg. At this place a sinall body of. rebels was encountered, who hastily retreated, Gen. Bunks tas been ordered to report at New Orleans. Sam. Medary, has been arrested upon an indigtment fur conspiracy agaiust the Goverapient. _. Howard, formerly an attache of the Times, has been‘urrested. On cember 27th the Governor of South Caro= lina was tendered troops: by the Governors of Georgia and North Carolina, and ‘on the 28th, the Custom House, Post Office Castle Pinkwey and Fort Moultrie were seized by South Carolina troops. December 29th, Secretary Floyd resigned because President Buchanan retused to withdraw Federal troops from Port Sumpter. On January 4th. the U. 8. arsenal at Mobile was: seized by the Secessionists, as wus-alse Fort Morgan. Athalf-past7 a. M., Jan. 9th, the the entfance of Charleston harbor. As she approached Fort Sumpter. a shot was sent across her bow from a battery on Morris Agland, when she displayed the American flag, and was rapidly fired into from the Morrie Island battery aud Fort Moultrie. She waa oput to sea. At JJ o'clock Mojor Aiderscn sent a flag with a comwunieation to Gov. Pickens, tu inquire if thie act bad . the sanetion of the State Government; and was intormed that it had, and thereupon “aent @ special messenger to Washington with dispatches. This waa the first gun fired on the stare and stripes, and being sanctioied hy Gov. These vessels were, however, atterwatds released. February 18th, Jeffereon Divie was inaugurated President of the Sauthetn Cuntederacy, reaching Presidential honors ig advance of President Lincoln. 7 March 14th, the Con« federate Congress passed an act for the organization of a Contederate Army. On the 18th, supplies were cut off (row Fort Pickens and the fleet in the Gulf ef Mexico, April 7th, no further inteFColirse ‘Waa allowed bie tween Fort Sumpter and Charleston. On April Iith, Gen, Beauregard makes a dewand lor the surrender .of Fort Sumpter.— On the 12th, Beauregard asked Major Anderson to name the time wher be would evacuate the Fort; when Major Anderson replied that he would evacuate at noon on the 15th, if not previously ordered, or supplied. At 330 a.m. Mj. Anderevn was notified that the batteries would Open on him in one hour. At 4.30 a. M. en the 42th ot April fire was opened on Fort Sumpter from Fort Moultrie, and soon after trou the six batterive on Mount Pleasaat, Cummings’ Point, and-w flowting battery.
