LLL eS
Tre Reien or Terroran East TenNESSEE.—A letter was recently received in
this city from J. G. Stanfield, a Union refugee from East Tennessee. It was written
from Marion county, Iowa, to a brother who
formerly resided in this place. It-ig only
additional testimary in regard to the sufferings of Union men m the Seuth.—
We make a few extracts from the letter. —
The writer says: “It 1s shocking tu think
noWin Iowa, I would give you a history of
wy adventures with the rebels, but it may
not reach you. I will tell you this much, all
the reports you have heard are true as gospel. I had to Jay out in the caves and wuods
for nearly two years, to keep out of their
way and was often without fund {yr days. The
rebele took everything I bad even to my
clothes. When Gen. Burnside took possession of East Tennesee, I leit for Kentucky.
I started on the 7th day of October, 1863,
and worked my way to this place. I expect
Zam 4s poor as any person you ever saw,
and Stripes once more. You would. hardly.
believe a man could undergo what I have.—
don’ represent things half as bad as they
are.”
“Tom, I hope you are loyal to ‘your coun»
try. Ifyou are not, mother aud aryself are
the only loyal ones of the family. I amore
ry to write that father, James and Martin
are in the rebel army. Se ee
could write all-night, butI have little hepes .
of this reaching you. I-will close by asking
you to be loyal to your country, for there is
tio better Constitution thun the old one.”
The letter contains the following list of
‘prices: Cora meal $10 per bushel, common ;
flour $150 per barrel, salt $100 per_bushel,
“common shoes $25 per pair, boots; when
found, $75 per pair, calico $5 per yard, a
Very common horse $500. .No mest and no
coffee to be had: The last coffee sold-brought
“$6 per pound.
Nor MUCH .EXCITED.—The following
‘good one wae told-us by_a gentleman who
was present on the occasion, in a mountain
‘town not more than a thoussud miles from
Nevada city, when the news of the fighting
between Grant and Lee's armies reached
that place. It seems a resident of the burg
‘was at the county seat at-the time the news
reached here. Kiowing he would be the
firat one to norate the tidings, he procured
& horse and started tor home with ail possi»
‘ble dispatch. He reached hia port of deatination and started for a eslowon where the

Purpose we will call him Biil, and we hope
our readers will pardon ua fur publishing the
‘profanity used by Bill, for without it the ans
ecdute would: be tame and Bill’s feelings
would not be properly appreciated. As
‘soon as he caine into the saloun the crowd,
seeing he was out of breath, nearly all exclaimed: Any news Bill?
Bill—You bet your jife. .
Question— Well, what is it?
Bill—There has been the G—d—est fight

Question—Who whipped ? ae
Bill—Graat, of evuree, ;

Bill—J—s C—t, about foyr hundred thousand prisoners taken and a thousand cannon.
