Indigent Odd Fellows’ Home,
One of the glories of Odd Fellowship lies in the fxct that it watches
over all.its members, is charitable to
ite indigent members, and louke after
the welfare of orphan children of
deconsed members. For. several
years past it has been evident to the
“Grand ° Lodge that an Asylam for
indigent members of the Order and
ig home for the ‘orphan cbildren’ was
_ what was required to make the institution what it is intended to be.
With this view, the recent session of
the Grand Lodge appointed a committee consisting of Davie Louder.
beck, of San Francisco; JulesaCe:f,
of Ban Fraucisco; Chas 8. Thowen,
ot Watsonville; H. T. Dowance, of
Stockton and Warren Heaton, of
Sacramento, w.th instructions tu
tution can be establisbed and maintained. When it is remembered
that the us-ets of the Lodges
of the jurisdiction “of Oulifor=
ey ra to the enormous’ sum
‘of $1,552,555, it will not be a
difficult task to establish such a
home. Odd Fellowship, although it
does not cultivate as much sociubility.as. some orders, has the consvulation of devoting its means to muke
the poor and destitute comfortable,
andthe needy bappy. -What betier
mission could the Order perform?

By announcement in another column it will be scen that L. H. Wells,
of this city, formerly one of the ownera of the Enreku Express und Stage
Line, is announced as o candidate
for the office of County Recorder,
subject to the decision of the Republean County Convention. Mr. Wella
would make’a good officer if elected.
* Now theice ia broken, other candidates sbould-tuke the same step
Mr. Wells bus, and let the people
know what offices they desire. Some
may thiok.the Offices will seek them
without makivg such pubiic ap' pouncement, but they will be terribly fooled if, they wait, for that.
Gentlemen come forward and let your
wishes be made known that the delegates may be posted as to who will
agoept the offives, so they can make
their own selections of-the men who
are the most competent, In every
county in thé State, except this, the
county candidates are announced and
the people are discussing their _merits and the delegates have doubtless
made up their miuds who they will
support. It is true no Convention bas
been culled here as yet, but friends of
the various cundidates, in different
parts of the county would be quite
apt to become delyates for the sake of
helping a person of their ohoive, It
. ban agood effect on delegates, and
there would not be that indifference
about attending County Conventions
if eandidates would come out in ad.
vance and announce their candidacy.
We might go on at length and expatiate upon the importance of this
, Btep, bat we think we have said

. Starrville,
The “Grass Valley Union’’ says
this is the naine of a new town which,
has spruvg up near Moore’s Flat.
Ite prinoipul industry is mining, and
the Watt wine is the one that is being opened tvere, and which started
the town into life. The Gluyas
Shaft, at the Watt Mine, Starrville,
ig going down us rapidly as itis possible to sink. The.prospects of the
shaft to lap a rich lead of gravel: are
very bright, and the property will be
worked by drifting and not-by~ bydraulicing; the drifting system is get-.
ting to be more in favor than the
“other on account of economy anda
more complete saving of gold. Yesterday morning Wm. Watt and A.
B. Dibble Esqrs. went up to Starrville to view the new town and they . .
will probabiy have the streets properly laid out. We understand that
in Starrville no pedro will be allowed
to ke played.

‘The mooniight ‘exoursion will take
place to-night. The Railroad Company have made every arrangement
for the safety and comfort of those
who muy’ desire to make the trip.
Carley & Mahon’ tiave prepared to
entettaix all who visi¢ them in a
ptincely style. Those who go will
assuredly have one of the pleasant.est rides imaginable, The moon’
shines brightly now. A brass band
goes with the-exoursion train, and
Maller’s quadrille band will furnish .
masic forthe dunce. We suppose
this city will demonstrate ite old
time reputation of turning out the
jolliest kind of a crowd. The dancing
. floor has been” inclosed with canvas
so that it-will be as well protected
from the weather as a hall would be,
aud t.ere will be no more danger
from exposure to the night air. :

‘Saratoga, a large iron steamship,
‘which was to be launcher, started
from its blocking sooner than expeéted, killing and wounding many,
Six dead bodies have: beeu removed.
It is sapposed that about forty men
were under the Saratoga when she
/ went off. An order was given for
them to come out, but was not heard.
The names of the killed, us far. as
koown, are Edward Fowby,John
. Nelson, Charles Wright and Edward
Burke, The wounded are George
Woof, mortally, and Barney Cann. n’
aud Walter Parkivson, seriously.
. It is thought some of the workmen
were killed and «ragged into the
water by tle ship. Some of the
deud are horribly mangled, ove be-.
with their’ legs and arms torn off,
The ship yard is thronged witb
friends and relatives of the victims,
The-total number of dead in consequence of the accident at the ship
yard is seven. Iu addition to those .

Now comes the ‘‘Truckee Republican’’ and says that ‘‘whife hard
times and business depression. prevail throughout the lower .counties,
-the-prospect for business, thrift and
generul prosperity inthe County of
Nevada were never better,’ and
then goes on with a flattering review
of affairs all over the county, thus
giving the ‘‘Plucer Herald” another
chance to squeal.

A.M. Three persons were wounded;:
ull of whom will probably: recover.
All.of the killed aud wounded were
worknien employed at the yards,
aud were engaged in knocking blocks
from unddr the keel, The scene
during the time the ehip was going
vff wus almost: heartrending, men
being séen* struggling to escape
while the huge blucks rolled by and
the ship crushed tuem to a jelly.
No assistauce could possibly be rendered by those who were standing
by. Iustead of cheers, sach as usually greet a launch, # wail of anguish went up, aud shrieks of pain
rent the air, As soon as possible the
dead snd wounded were carried: to
the yard uffice and physicians summoved. Abvut 1900 men are employed at the yard, and -friends of
nearly all of them rushed to inquire
for them. Flags are at half uiast
‘throughout the town, and work at
the yurd has been stopped. Juba,
Roach, proprietor of the sbip-y rd,
hus ordered mouvey to be furnished

that the ship was ready to move aud
called for all hands te get from under before I commenced cutting the
loops. The men who were down by
the after blocking evideutly did not
hear the order, ordid not obey, as
they had fully five minutes to get out
from thetime the order was given
uatil the ship started, Some of:the.
men rewained uuder, which is fre

A Falsehood,
The Son Francisco Chronicle is daily abusing Senator Sargent and each:
urticle contains so many lies that it
would be impossible to attempt to
answer them, if anybody was so disposed. Iu its issue of Tuesday it
suys: “‘Surgent was at one time the
owner and editor of a Republican
daily paper at Nevada.”” Sargent never owned oredited ad ily paper in
Nevada City in his life, and the editor
-. of the Chronicle knew he was lying
when-he saidso, Mr. Sargent did
own and edit a weekly paper in this
city at 0.1e time and ceased his connection with it in 1857, since which
time he has had nothing to do with
any paper, , This is only . one out of
a thousand and one lies that that
