7/ WAVE-POWER MOTOR,
» —— ’
Uti'iing the Immense Water Power of the
. _ Ocean Itself,
After many accidents and trials the
wave-powermotor so long talked of, has
at last been finished and proved a success. The construction of this thachine
or apparatus, which was begun in July,
ISS, was at the time considered a hairbrained scheme, but the projectors stuck
to their plan and seem now to be in a
dair way of success. Great difficulty was
experienced at first in getting the materials to withstand the force of rocks thrown
against tuein by the waves and the pipes
which con iuct the water up the bluff
were broken and carried away no, less
than ‘ouiteen times. When the schooner
tarailel went ashore and her cargo of
dynamite exploded the motor was completely wrecked. A mass of rock weizhing six hundred tons was thrown from
th «lit and fell across the chasn over
which the motor was suspended blocking it up.to such an extent that n-arly
three months were consumed in blasting
out the debris. Soon afterward another
mags Of stone weighing one’ hundred and
fifty ‘tons fell and had to be removed.
The motor, which was designed and built
by E. T. Steen, is a very simple contriyance and still is capable of exerting a
great power.
Across a chasm in the rocks just north
of Varallel l’oint a bridge of heavy timbers was built. Suspeniled from this is
a huge fan or paddle of oak timbers, with
the spreading portion downward. — This
is fastened to the bridge by immense
hinges which allow it, when in operation,
to swing back and forward a distance of
thirty-six. feet as the waves strike it. The
handle or upper portion of the fan is
connected with a solid plunger pump
twelve inches in diameter and having a
stroke of nine to twelve feet. This pump
in turn is connected with a suction pipe
running out into deep water. The ian
is co rigged that it can be drawn up out
of reach of the waves when not in use.
When a wave comes in the fan is thrown
forward and forces the air out of the
pump barrel in which the plunger works.
On the wave receding the fan is carried
seaward and the plunger drawn out,
causing @ vacuum and causes a quick
rush of water into the suction pipe. ihe
force with wich the water is drawn up is
sulticient to raise it to an elevation of
350 feet above the tide level. :
Should this motor prove as successful
as the projectors. seem contident it will,
several others will be built in the same
neighborhvod and an immense reservoir
built on the hill to contain the water.
This one moor, with its twelve inch
plunger, is capable of raising 12,000 cubie
feet of water 350 feet high in ever
twenty-four hours, The uses to whic
the water will be put are various. A
thirty-six-inch pipe will be conducted to
the city and water will be supplied to
all branches of industry where machinery is needed, Bathing houses will also
be supplied with salt water and sewers
flushed where it is Aopeeery:
‘Lhe first work performed will be beori siymtidame and Spiaht.
finch pipe is now ayia forthe par
The last-mentioned pipe is for Adolph
Sutro and is to be utilized in sluicing
way a large amount of drifting sand from
the heights just back .of the aquarium,
The work is rendered necessary to prevent the sand from washing back on the
beach and retarding the work there.
The immense fan of the motor generates a large amount of energy which is
not used in working the pump, and when
everything is in. shape electric dynamos
will be erected to utilize this energy for
heating purposes and the like, é
Justice in China,
The Tartar general for Kirin gives an
account of the trial of an o ucer na ned
Telengo, one of whose men comunitted
suicide under the fear of receiving further punishment, he deceased, Yuch’eng by name, was a government
hunter and at the same time-a soldier in
the company cominanded by ‘t:-lengo,
Not long ago he bought some cluthes on
credit tro:u a fellow soldier named sauhai, promising to give hin the nuney,
10) cash, when they received their pay.
On the 5th of April, while Telengo was
enraged in paying his men, Sau-hai
asked Yu-ch’eng to settle the debt.
.u-ch’ ng reiused and a quarr:l coinmenced between the two men. ‘Telengo heard the noise and sent for thein,
but when they came they refused to
unswes his questions and behaved in an
insubordinate manner. He therefore
comuanded a pretty officer named Futunga to flog them.
While Sau hai was undergoing punishment, Yu-ch’eng took the opportunity to
run off, but he was recaptured by some
svidierg sent after him, and was given
02, blows, with a whip, on the legs.
Next morning he ran away again, but
was brought back, He was punished
with seventy blows, after which ten
more were inflicted by Telengo himself,
because he considered that. suilicient
severity was not being used. Telenco
also said that he would report the case
to the general and have the man properly punished. After this he went oif with
his troops to the drill ground, where he
found an opportunity to speak to the
general. The latter dir cted that the
man should be:sent to the quarterinaster
general’s department and dealt with
there, A file of soldiers were ‘sent to
taxe him across, but they found him lying down unable to move. When questioned he said that he was afraid of being further punished after the tloggings
he had received and had swallowed
some opium which had been left from an
entert, ~giventheday
Kemedies were applied, but without
avail, and in ashort time he was dvad.
The Memorialists finds that ‘Telenzo
was right in ordering the decease! to ie
chastised, and that the flogging wus inflicted on a proper yortion of the body.
But the amount of punishment, 189
blows, was excessive. He therefore congerne Telengo to receive ninety blows,
under the statute which deals with the
offense of causing a man’s death b
mu iishing him improperly. In addition,

CURE .OF
CANCER and ULCERS.
Judge T. C. McLendon writes to the Swift
Bpecific Co., Atlanta, Ga., under date of February 14, 1888: “* About three ‘years ago, Jerry
Bradley, a colored man, had a cancerous sore
on his face, near the right eye. It caused
him a great deal of pain, and ho lost the sight
of the eye, but was finally cured of the cancer
by the use of Swift's Specific. This case is
well known in Wilkes Co., Ga, where he lived
(near Danbury), and of this case, I, myself,
had personal knowledge.”"
Mr. L, Cox, of Arkabutla, Tate Oo., Miss.
writes, February %, 1888 : “I suffered a great
deal from old ulcers for six years. Your medicine was recommended to me, and after
using six bottles, I was completely cured. I
-never saw its equal as a Blood Purifier, My
neighbors will use no other. Your medicine
does even more than you claim for it. Ihave
known it to cure cases which were ht to
be hopeless. It is the best medicine made."*
Mrs. A. M. Goldsmith, No, 674 Warren St.,
Brooklyn, N. ¥., writes, February 22, 1888 : “I
commenced using 8, 8, S. about three years
ago. I had suffered with a sore throat for
over a year, when I commenced using your
remedy. Lused.a great many other remedies
with no good results. My little girl, also, had
sore fingers ; it commenced from the quick,
and then the natls would come off. We dootored her for over two years, and when I commenced using 8.8. S.I thought I would see
what it would do forher. Iam thankful to
say that it entirely cured her. Itisthe best .
remedy I know of for-the blood. I really
believe it was the means of saving my life.
The doctor told me I had a throat disease
similar to General Grant's, I cheerfully
recommend it to all suffering from disordered blood. I use it now asa tonic whenever I think I need it,”
Mr, B. F. George, Milford P. 0., Ellis Co.,
Texas, writes: “I had a cancerous wart or
mole on my eyelid, as large as the end of my
thumb, which had the appearance of cancer,
~causing me much pain and-inflammation,
from which I suffered a long time. Seeing
the 8. 8. 8. advertised I commenced using it,
and after the use of a few bottles the sore
dropped out, my cancer was gone, and I was
entirely relieved.”
Mr. G, W. Pettis, ¥ Aikin, 8. ©., writes: “I
was a sufferer cancer of the breast,
and had been under the treatment of three
hysicians, but it did mene good. It was so
that I had to stop work, After taking a
