Australia Nuggets.
Like the California deposits, those
of Australia are of two kinds—the
drift or alluvial deposits, and those
found in veins or quartzrock. Gold
in the drift deposits has been found
in larger masses than in any other
part of the world. About a hundred
nuggets have been picked up in the
single colony of Victoria, averaging
370 ounces in weight. Some of them
weighed more than 3,000 ounces.
The following is alist of the names
and value.of the largest nuggets
which were fonnd within a few feet
of the surface : The Welcome Stranger, $47,670; nugget unnamed, $27,500; the Welcome, $46,625 ; the
Heron, $20,040 ; the Blanche Batkley, $32,535.; Lady Hotham, $15,000.
