pore & CALKINS, a K.P. BROWN. ...%.. Business Manager imonaen a. CALKINS. Ss Mbga es ate Editor Nevada Connty Official Press. THURSDAY, MAY 24. TRE FAIR. Yhe Transcript says that it is expected that G alley will furnish most of the money fur holding the Fair this season, bat that ‘‘Nevada ~ will not be backward about the ion she ought to.” a City was liberal. with the viibsoriptions on the proposition that the pavilion was to be located’ thete this season, but when the Directors decided in favor of Grass Valley, the Nevada subscribers almost to a man took the back track, and . ; have manifested no disposition since to aid the eres ee Valley Union. . In four hours’ time aE City subscribed $1950, and not one-quarter of the citizens were solicited, Only two men refused to gite. Subsequent to that time $1250 has been raised here towards the purchase of Glenbrook Park, and the receipts to meet current expenses have been increased $700 over the first named . figures, making a total of $3,900. All this wasdone with the understanding that the pavilion be located here, and the money would have been promptly paid to the committee had not the meeting of the Board of Directors resulted in the unexpected action that it did. It is not true, as the Grass Valley Union intimates, that our people refuse toassist the enterprise: They will, we feel warranted in promising, contribute an equal share with Grass Valley towards making the park programme a success; but they certainly will not pay for building the pavilion at Grass Valley, trom which they do not expect to derive any benefit. Next year Nevada City will not ask Grass Valley to do more than Nevada City is willing to do this year. To make the point still plainer,” let Grass Valley without unnecessary delay name the amount that it will give towards buying the park, improvements and other expenses, and we guarantee that inside of twenty-four hours Nevada City will have covered the contribution with a like amount. As we said a few days since, if Grass Valiey does not want the Fair on these terms let the fact be known at ouce and Nevada City will step inte the breach. This town will not have to be coaxed or hired or shamed into displrying what little gener. osity and pu’slic spirit is necessary . to having a Fair that will be a credit to the county and a joy to all who attend it, Let_the papers of Grass Valley come out and tell the people what is being done down there towards getting money together. Has any effort been made to obtain subscriptions, and if so— What did the leading hotel give? How many saloons are there that subscribed from $25 to $75 each. What did the two newspaper offices do? ZF How many grocery dealers’ names are down, and what did their contributions average ? How liberal are the dry goods men ? : And so on to the end of the chapter, Are the figures up to a_respectable size, or does the list lock like this: oeht, Capitalist. sic.. ok $2.00 Mr. Dry Goods Man..... 1,50 Ry oh Rip alae ea raga 5.00 Mr.'Saloon Keeper...... 5.00 Mr. Mining Superintendent.. .50 Mr.:Giocery Man ar, Newspaper Mat Etc., etc., ete, Or does the list read like the following, which we copy from the frst few pages of the Nevada City subscription -book ? .
