Published Daily, Mondays Excepted, i BY—j BROWN & CALKINS. _ (SATURDAY, MAY 24, 1884. —E—— Tue narrowest house in New York is 251 William street, near ‘new Chambers street. It is three “ atories high, and not quite six feet ‘wide. Itis of red brick. A shoemaker occupies the lower floor, and ‘has to seat himself equidistant from the sides to prevent rasping of his el¥ows by the walls whenever he * makes astitch, There,is, of course, no room for a stair case, and persons entering the house must either go through the shoe shop or by doors leading in from adjoining houses. —— Tur Alleghany Fire Committee wanted to go to New York t> purchase an engine and otherwise amuse themselves, and asked the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for fifteen passes, The corporation responded "with four passes, which aroused the ‘indignation of the committee men to such a virtuous hight that they resolved to pay their fares on another line, and whereased that the. Penn. sylvania coaporation was to too mean to n:ean to live, and could go to Jericho with its old railroad, Buarnu is the “Young Hickory” of the-agé; He is full of vigor and fight. Had he been President when Chile insulted and laughed at Unole Sam the dignity of the nation would have been maintained. Blaine when elected President will place his country in a condition to resent insults, . Then no fourteenth-rate power, like Chile, will threaten us with annihilation, No nation insults another that is powerful and prepared for war, ———— 6 <> 6 Ir begins to look as if gas light wae perfectly able'to withstand the sheck of electricity. John F, Swift, of San Francisoo, writes from Paris and says that gas lights are coming to the front again and are superseding the electric lights in the gay capital of France. He says that gas has been much improved, and attributes the reaction to this fact, -° ; a oe CArrorN1a’s youth continue to go to the bad with alarming rapidity. A JUDICIAL decision on the virtuee of the divining-rod as, a locator of precious metals is likely to be rendered in Colorado, an expert with the witch hazel having brought. suit against an estate for the value of his services, It would be curious to hear the expert testimony which will be introduced in this case. An educational journal adviscs that there should be a regular physician attached to every school of importance to overlook the physical development of the pupils, The systemhas already been adopted in Paris, the physicians making regular tours of inspection, being pajd by the municipality. o> e CABLE CARS are to be introduced in Philadelphia, and with an apparent certainty of success, as the company, instead of establishing mew lines, has leased horse-car lines which have been carrying over 40,000,0i ) engers a year, and will convert he tracks into cable traction lines. ———— ee SUBSCRIPTIONS amounting to more than seventeen times the desired sum have been offered in response to the Russian Government’s call for a loan of £15,000,000 to be used in the construction of railways. Another Atlantic Cable, ‘A scheme for crossing the Atlantic by another telegraph line is exciting much support among the capitalists of Copenhagen. It is proposed to start from Thurso, in Scotland, from there to run to the Fare Islands, and from the Farce Islands to Iceland, and from Iceland to the west coast of Greenland,’ from whence it dips southward to \Lawrence Bay, striking the American Continent finally at Gaspe Harbor. The total length of the cable is to be 3,150 miles, The longest section will be leas than 900 miles, and on that account itis anticipated that it will do the work of any two cables now uniting Europe and America. The scheme, however, has not yet advanced beyond the stage of project. Pm Tue French Lemperance Society has been making some experiments on the alcoholization of pigs. They find that whisky has no other effect on the pig than to make him sleepy. This is believed to be due to the smallness of his brain, which fact ‘the Pall Mall Gazette thinks will bring great comfort to the men of low mental endowment, They can have all the fun of* getting drunk without running any risks of serious results, + Oe Pitre ScHNsIDER, a watchman on the steamer Montana, was suspected of the recent theft of $1,500 from the safe while the boat lay at St. Louis.
