Children’s Picnic.
Last Saturday morning about sixty
roembers of the Loyal Legion of this
city met at the M. E. Church and
walked out to Indian Flat where they
had Leen invited by ‘‘Silver Spray”
legion of that ‘place. The day was
joyously spent. Among the principal amusements were crowning the
, May Queens, ‘May Moore of this city
and Miss Ida Hughes of Indian Flat;
dancing around the May pole, and a
grand promenade led by Willie Dennis
and the younger Queen of May. The
children ate their luncheon under the
fruit trees, in the clover. During the
day the children of ‘Silver Spray”
entertained the little folks from town
with a fine literary program. The
following took part: Ernest Miller,
Lester Kirkham, Ear! Cleveland, Emma Trevaskis, Julia Curry and May
Eden. Several of the Nevada City
legion responded in a pleasing. manner. About five o’clock the party
started home. It was a day so delightfully spent that it will long be remembered by the children of both

Weuld Fight According to Kule.
The Grass Valley Union tells this
good one: Recently in one of our
public schools the teacher secured a
warlike epistle that one of the ten
year-old boy. pupils had. written to
another of about the same age who had
given him affront. It -wasa challenge
to afistic encounter at the éxpiration
of the school hour, to take place ina
neighboring .alley, and to be conducted according to the rulesofthe ring,
each ‘“‘man”’ to have his seconds, and
they te choose a referee. The teacher
did not oppose or countermand the
fight, but did read the challenge for
the edification. of the school amid the
shouts of laughter of the pupils. The
ridicule that was thus thrown upon the
threatened contest was more effective
than any effort of authority to stop
the fight. The challenge remained
unsent and the P. R. is now ata disdiscount in school.

its occupants. Baldwin struck the

found to be crushed and internal in-/.
juries sustained. His condition is very
serious and his recovery is doubtful.
Baldwin was secretary of the Republican County Committee. and is ‘well

Amateur Dramatics: ——
At Grass Valley on Tuesday evening
next some amateurs will attempt to
play the beautiful and intensely interesting drama of ‘‘Comrades.” The
only extenuating circumstance in the
whole proceeding is that the profits of
the exhibition will go to the Good

along, often trusting to luck to help
me through. Happily luck, does not

tell me how to ‘keep the run of the
cards?”
David Kay in his work on ‘‘Memory”’
gives some hints that may be found
very useful by the lady as’ well as by
others. Mr. Kay says:
“In order to attain the highest form
of memory it is necessary to cultivate
the faculty of imagination, or the power of holding up to the min . past sensations or impressions as if they were
again actually present. “We can retain the impression of an object fo the
mind for some time af er the object itself has passed away, by allowing the
mind to dwell upon it, and we can
afterwards readily recall it. Lay an
object, say your watch, on the table,
and look at it intently for a few seconds ; you will find on shutting your
eyes that you still retain -a more or
less distinct image of it. Even after
a considefable time you may ‘recall
the image of the watch and the exact
spot where. it lay.” So if in place of
one object, two or three are placed on
the table, after contemplating them a
short time their images may be reproduced in the brain and afterwards recalled with great distinctness.
“In this way one may soon learn to
remember all the cards that have been:
playing for a life-time may fail to teach
him. Let him begin by throwing
down four cards, one by—one, upon
the table,-observing €ach-by itself-and
the order in which it is laid down, as
well-as-the whole together, till le
feels that he has learned them. Let
bim then take them up and after a
time replace them as they were before
from memory, andefThis till he feels
that he has thoroughly mastered them.
For a second lesson let him take four
cards and treat them in this way, and
then four more; and let -him proceed
in this way, always increasing the
number till he can také in the whole
pack,-and-tell-of-esze-one-of-tre-cards
when and where it was thrown down.
That mere playing may never teach #
man this is owing to the attention being taken up with the play and not
. sufficiently directed to this operation.”

This opinion, itis believed, seriously
affects the status of more than a hunired thousand cases in the mineral
division alune of thé General Land
Office. Deputy mineral surveyors have
for several yezrs, it is said, sworn to
the correct ness of their Statements before notaries public. During the last
four years a large number of cases
received for patents at the General
Land Office where final proof was not
made before the officer designated by
law for the purpose. When no other
error was found they have ‘been allowed to go-to patent. This policy was
first adop‘ed by Secretary Vilas. The
opinion of the Supreme Court has
created alarm, and a request for an in‘erpretation of section 2335 of the Revised Statutes has been sént to Assistant Attorney General Shields, with
particular reference to the Supreme
Court decision and its effect upon pending case in the General Land Office.

The history of the past. has proven
beyond a question that an endowment
policy in a life insurance company is
a mnch
BETTER INVESTMENT
Than a savings bank; FIKS1', because
it is very much safer—as the law of the
State of New York requires every life
insurance company to: keep a
Reserve ‘iin First-Class Securities
‘qual to its liabilities, dollar for dollar; SECOND, in case of death while
making these small deposits, the life
insurance company will pay, just when
niost needed by the family, the
Full Amount
Of the sum insured; amounting to 10,
20, or even 30 times as-much as has
_been deposited; or on the
Return Premium
Plan of the Mannarran, they would
do even more than this, for they
would at death pay the face of the
policy, and in addition all the deposits
(premiums) paid, while the Savings
bank would only return the amounts
. actually deposited with interest.
Who would not purchase a valuable
piece of property—a farm, for example
—wortn $10,000, if he could bave
twenty years te-pay—for it, in small
suis of $300 per annum with interest
on deferred payments; and without
any tax on it? the $300 per vear being
only 3 per cent. of the $10,000--a sum
not much greater than thst paid annually for taxes on property. in hand, of
the same cost, and especially if he
could ‘have the further conditions
specially stated in the contract, Ist,
that if he dies while making there
payinents—even afier one only has
been tmade-No Further Payments Shall be Required,
And the full title in fee timple to the
entire farm shall at once be given to
the family ; and 2d, that if at any time
fier three years during the twenty
years he shalt be unable to contiune
the payments aud from sickness or
‘py misfortune, that then he conld
discontinue any further Payments and
have in fee simple such portions of the
farm as he had paid for; thns, if onefourth of the payments hud been made,
he would own one separate fourth of
the farm ; if one-half of the payments
had been made, he would own onehalf of the farm, ete., and at the
same time the farm be entirely free
from all claims of creditors, under. al]
circumstances, not even to be reached
by: writ of execution or attachment issued by any court, while if living to
the end of the twenty years and the
annus] payments have been made, the
Entire Property in Fee Simple
is secured,
Now, the Manuarran Lire IngurANCE ComPANY offers all this and
more, for instead of offering LAND on
these terms, which is often eaten up
by legal expenses and fees in case of
the death of tie purchaser, or swallowed up by a mortgage given to secure deferred payments, thus losing
the whole amount paid in and leaving
the famiiy destitute, or dependent, it
offers a
Specific Bond Secured by Millions of
First-class Securities
Agreeing to pay MONEY on the same
terms and conlitions as above—the
cost per year varying at different ages,
but otherwise subsiuntiaHy the same
terms as above stated, whiie the sum
to be paid at the end cfthe twenty
years wiil be increased by dividends
and compounded interest for the full
term, thus making the investment a
very PROFITABLE and ADVANTAGEOUS one.
