The Daily. Transcript, NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA. ae = _ TUESDAY, MAY 25, 1869; Grape Cutture Witnovr Irriesture of the vine has been a heavy item. THe Mixes IpLe.—The Alfa speaking of the miners’ strike, says : The mine-owners generally determined, very properly not to submit to such dictation. The North Star, which has employed 160 men, the Pittsburg 80, the Empire 150, the Banner 80-and the Allison 40, have dismissed all the _ Angeles have demonstrated that grapes duced without irrigation: The Stargives the following experiment: A little over three years ago,Mr. Eaton conceived the idea of planting a vineyard at the base of the Coast Range Mountains, and cultivate the vinés without irrigation ; the first year he planted five ~ thousand cattings upon four acd.a half "\ aeres of land, and gave them no irrigation whatever; at two years old they produced ten thousand pounds of grapes which sold in the. market for one hundred dollars ; the cost of cultivation, including labor of every. description, . amcunted to twenty-seven dollars, leaving a clear profit of seventy-three dollars for the crop; or a sum equal to the profits of more than an average wheat crop; thus our readers will see that the “of expense, but experiments in Lae of a better quality for wine can be pros. News Irems.—We get the following from the Union of yesterday : There is . . a@ prospect of the union of the old and new. school Presbyteriap churches through the action of the General Assembly how jn session. __ Suniner’s friends say he will invite a GENTLEMEN ! I WANT THE MONEY -—and all sree Resouiats which have been standCRAWFORD & CO, ’ DEALERS IN . HEAVY AND SHELF” vineyard commenced paying a profit very rapidly until the vines attain the age of five years, when they will yield an avériire of eight pounds to the vine, or forty thousand pounds, which at the lowest market price, would amount. to four hundred dollars,as the product of grape grown at the base of the mountain, particularly those produced from vines without irrigation, make a finer wine than those produced in ‘the Wat leys, and sell fora higher price in the market. The new wine commanding lons of wine to every hundred pounds of grapes, which vineyardists say isa : small yield, will make “the products of ~ years of age, twelve hundred dollars, the. whole expense of cultivating of which, without irrigation,is only thiirtyfive dollars per annum, leaving a clear profit of eleven hundred and sixty-five _ dollars from four and a half acres of land, or two hundred and fifty-nine dollars per acre. The vineyard of Mr E. has been extended each year by the planting of cuttings, as it suited his convenience, until the vineyard now numbers sixty thousand healthy vines; divided as follows : Five thousand ,three years old; thirty thousand, two years occupying about fifty acres of land.— The experiment, now that it is proven ‘to be a success, recommends itself to our readers and agriculturists, for two reasons : first, it proves that a large belt of country lying at the base of the mountains.of the Coast Range, will produce vineyards without irrigation, and the grape so produced is of better flavor and makes a superior wine to the grapes produced in the lower lands, where irrigation is freely resorted to ; second, it done with well directed labor, without the use of capital. The whole amount of capital expended by Mr. E.,independent of what he has earned from the sale of produce raised upon the land during the time he has been founding his vineyarc, does not exceed five hundred doland a family of small children, and founded w vineyard that is now paying him a profit equal to that of wheat growing in any of the great grain growingiStgtes, and which will, in three or that will support its owner in affluence. What has been done by. Mr. E. can be accomplished by any prudent practical man, and proves that labor in California is more profitable than in any other part of the world. All the advantages ' of Los Angeles are equaled inNevada county, and if the vine can be advanta~ gegusly cultivated there without irriga. tion, this lecality, with a much larger _rain falt has the advantage. ‘ The Duke of Argyle has put his young~\_ est son into a mercantile heuse an shocked British aristocracy immeasurafour and—a half acres of—land.
