Death of Jesse D. Bright.
Ex-United States Senator Jesse D.
Bright died on the 20th, afteran illness of considerable duration. Senator Bright, who represented Indianain the United States Senate, at
the breaking out of the civil war, was
a man_of great popularity at one
time among the people of that State.
Soon after the beginning of thé war,
a letter which be addressed to’ Jeff.
Davis, as Presidetit of the Confederaey, recommending a young: friend
tothe kind consideration of Davis
came to light; and for writing this
seat in the Senate by a vote of that
body. “This ended his political career, which up to that time, had been
full of prowise. It-has been said
that Bright had no thonght of wrong
purpose when he wrote that letter;
that it was a mere act’of kindness to
a young friend; and that it. was written in March before the war had
commenced. These extenuating cirDeath of General Redington, . cumstances, however, did not avail,
amid the intense excitement which
prevailed at the time, and he was
expelled: We never took any known’
part in the rebellion, however, not-.
withstanding this’ summary dismissal.
Twenty Cent Pieces.
‘It is expected that tle coinage of
tweuty cent pieces will be begun on
Wednesday, as the dies are to be here
by that time. The new coin is described as follows: ‘On the obverte
side a femala figure sits, holding in
her handa pole bearing the liberty
cap, the whole representing the usual figure of the Goddess of Liberty.
Underneath this the date of coinage,
and suirounding the figure are thirteen stars representing the thirteen
original States of the Union. On the
yeverse side is the figure of an-eagle
displayed, surrounded with the inscription ‘United States of A erica’
‘and the denomination of the“coin.
