Mr, McPheeters. The ‘‘Marysville Appeal’’ bas published seversl articles in regard to the Reverend gentleman whose name beads this column,: but it is impossi-~ “bie to ascertain from any of them what the rumpos was kicked up about. In that paper of the = the following appears: Acard. In consideration of certain rumors current growingout of a -—misrepresentation of the-fact—con-} tained im the charges against the Rev. Mr. McPheeters in the recent preliminary exainination had in this ~“gity, E claim it bat just to him, his friends, and the cause of right, to state that there were no charges of « against him in apy particolir whatever. So _ far from their being tbe truth the conyention frequen:ly stated during the examination that they —did--not make any charges ngainst Rev. Mr. _ MoPheeters, and that they neve even entertuifed 4 suspic on in reference to his buving done wnything criming. Jo making this statement I might add in farther C¢ovfirmation .of the above -that I was present durivg the progress of the trial and beard and wrote all the testimony pro and con, but there was * mot one word said upon the part of any of the witnes-es that indicated either their belief or suspicion’ of anything criminalin the Rev. Mr. McPheeters, Furtber than this I have been inforucd by gentlemen _of unimpeschable characters thatt}be . prosecution upou more than one occasion reiterated to t'vem the same _gtatement that I make in the ~gbove. —Jamis He Waite; We have now published all we have seen in relution to the matter, because the Rev. Mr. McPheeters has a great many triends ip this eounty who were anxious to know ‘about thé trouble be was supposed to bein. No one here has believed for a moment that charge could be bro ght against him and sustained, but, on the contrary, ‘ they believe that there was a conspiracy of some kind gotten up to injure his fair name. eard, which is published to expliin matters leaves us as much in the dark . . “aa we were before. As the writer gays ‘‘there were no charges of a. criminal nature preferred against “him in any particular whatever,” we4 would like t#&know why there was an examination, and why the inferenee is allowed to go out to lead the _ people to believe there was? The writer further says: ‘‘There was not one word said, during the eXamination, upon the part of any of the witnesses, that indicated with their belief or suspicion of anything criminalin the Rev. Mr. McPheeters,’’ “Now all this is balderdast’ aud is doing a great injury to Mr, McPheeters, because people are led to believe that he hus been guilty of something horrible, and yet no facis are given. Just enough has been said to injure his reputation asa gentleman and a minister of the gospel, and it is due to the Reverend gentleman that a stutenent of the the case should be mude and given to the public. The course that has been pursued is of the meanest character, because peuple draw all surts of inferences from what has been eakd, a5 oo eS The Revivalist, Mr. Moody was welcomed back to the Boston Tabernacle on Sunday by large throngs. He looked fresh: and. vigorous, and spoke with all— his accustomed vigor and earnestness: In the afiernoon a teinperance meet-ing was held, Mr. Moody conducting . the exercises, In the evening the evangelist prenched on “Hope,” gaying during the course of his sermon: ‘Hope iv never used in the Scriptures to express doubt, but now @ great many Coristiaus use it to express their doubts. Ido not know how many Christians I have asked ~ about their soul's welfare, and reeeived the answer, ‘I bupe I “am a Christian,’ ‘Il hope I am,’’ Now, you cannot find that anywhere inthe Word of God. The recently purchased safe for Nevada County arrived in this city : “Sapervisors Brady and Allan were authorized by the: Board sometime since_to purchase‘a first-class safe in which to keep the money and valuables of the county, and after making careful inquiries and observation of the different makes, decided to purchase one of Mr, Williams, of Sacramento, the agent of the celebrated Detroit Safe Company. Special-drawings were made according to their order, and the safe fully meets with their approval, On its arrival yesterday, two experts armed with the best implements were on the~ground, and the most thgrough drill tests were made upon it until the workmen, the Supervisors, the Coonty Treasurer and a lirge nomber of spectaiors were galisfied that the box could not be eotered by burylars no matter how long” a time they might have for operation. The safe weighs 14, 100. pouuds. It cost, delivered ut Sacramento, $2,700. The freight which was paid by tue agent, ~ It is uiade with outside fire provf sufc wich folding dots and Goapilcition wek. The Company is armed with Springtield breech-loaders, wears the regulation uniform, and has a splendid armory, 114x50 feet in dimensions, The members “also have a fine rifle range in the outskirts of town. The officers are: Captain, J. A. Rapp; First Lieutenant, Wo. J. Organ, and Second Lieutenant, Jas. Murebie. A visit to their armory this week satisfies us that au excellent state of discipline prevails. The arms and equipments are in adwirable condition, showing that the ‘best of care is taken of the State's prop-. erty, The Company has been ordered out by Captain Rapp, for its annual target practice on the 26th inst., and as we have been promised a copy uf the official scores, our riflemen here will be able to compuie the shooting with that done bere.”’ For County Treasurer. .
