A Miners’ Veague Needed.
be oh 25th, 18%
The imperative need of the hour
seems to us to be unaniinity of political action on the partof the mining
population’ of California, . Day by
day>they are losing theit prestige in .
:, the ‘matter of assisting to shape ;the.
affairs of State. This ‘seems t6 be
owing not so much to the decrease of
theirnumbers as to a growing disposition on their part to lose sight
of “the necessity of guarding their
common rights, and direct their attention to agitating more gepexal, put
not so vital (to them) questions of
weal. ‘We hold that. here i in Nevada
cottity especially an’ organization
calculated simply . to advance the
gold hunters’ prosperity should be
organized, with branches in’ every
_energy and capital used on

precinct where there isa mine. “Ef it
is made_a State prganigetion, so much
the better. Let it be an honest institution, honestiy, condueted by honest
practiegl miners. Make the conditiong of, mesnbershipso broad that ev-"ery white ,laborer ,in the mines,
whether he te a Republican, Demo_crat or Workingman, can join, and
at the same time feel he is surrounded with .a congenial atmosphere.
Have it economigally ;conducted, se+the expense to each individual will
be ‘merely pomigal. .Qstracise from
it ranks all office seekers, demagogues and office holders. Let the
miptto' be -to the efiecttbhat theminers
—of California insist upon retaining
every privilege they have enjoyed. in
a legal manner heretofore;and that
the Asiatic-hordes must be driven
out of ourland. When they exercise
theright of ‘franchise on public occa,Si0n8,.where their interests are at
stake, ‘let “them elect men from
taeir-own tanks who have proven jn
private life that they have ‘enough
Jjatelligence and honesty to accomplish what is wanted by their constitnents. Letit be no high-tened
affair, but one for every man who’
works. The,iasues of. ithis: decade do.
not want to be handled: by _kid-gleared and plug-hatted fellows, but, by
men with sweat-stained brows and
calloused hands and practical minds.
Such a party as .we have suggested
would be an unparalelled success: in
Nevada county, if yighjly conduesed.
Mining and Gambling.
Fhe Bulletin asserts that which is
especially proven true by the career
of enterprises in Nevada county
when it says there is a broad distinction between development of a
mine ina legitimate business way
and through the operation of stock
pools. Some of the best mines of
California have pever Allowed their
stocks tobe hawked ‘about. © ‘There
is no need for guch ¢ a course in the
case of these small claims, if the parties ownipg them mean legitimate
dusjness. It is " generally pn easy
matter to raise enough joney in the
ordinary way to work any,c}aim that,
can show merit. “The Amador, Eureka, Pravidehce; Merrifield, Murchie, Adaho, among the California,
quartz claims, and Excelsior, Milton,
and N, Bloomfield among the gravel
claims are fair representatives of the
subject. The list might be considerably evlarged.” The above wines
have furnished darge quantities of,
bullion, but neither ‘of them, has:
ever been under the control of stockgamblers. Outsiile of these incor-,

more tocome. Small claims of this
