Day by day>they are losing theit prestige in . :, the ‘matter of assisting to shape ;the. affairs of State. This ‘seems t6 be owing not so much to the decrease of theirnumbers as to a growing disposition on their part to lose sight of “the necessity of guarding their common rights, and direct their attention to agitating more gepexal, put not so vital (to them) questions of weal. ‘We hold that. here i in Nevada cottity especially an’ organization calculated simply . to advance the gold hunters’ prosperity should be organized, with branches in’ every _energy and capital used on gialy precinct where there isa mine. “Ef it is made_a State prganigetion, so much the better. Let it be an honest institution, honestiy, condueted by honest practiegl miners. Make the conditiong of, mesnbershipso broad that ev-"ery white ,laborer ,in the mines, whether he te a Republican, Demo_crat or Workingman, can join, and at the same time feel he is surrounded with .a congenial atmosphere. Have it economigally ;conducted, se+the expense to each individual will be ‘merely pomigal. .Qstracise from it ranks all office seekers, demagogues and office holders. Let the miptto' be -to the efiecttbhat theminers —of California insist upon retaining every privilege they have enjoyed. in a legal manner heretofore;and that the Asiatic-hordes must be driven out of ourland. When they exercise theright of ‘franchise on public occa,Si0n8,.where their interests are at stake, ‘let “them elect men from taeir-own tanks who have proven jn private life that they have ‘enough Jjatelligence and honesty to accomplish what is wanted by their constitnents. Letit be no high-tened affair, but one for every man who’ works. The,iasues of. ithis: decade do. not want to be handled: by _kid-gleared and plug-hatted fellows, but, by men with sweat-stained brows and calloused hands and practical minds. Such a party as .we have suggested would be an unparalelled success: in Nevada county, if yighjly conduesed. Mining and Gambling. Fhe Bulletin asserts that which is especially proven true by the career of enterprises in Nevada county when it says there is a broad distinction between development of a mine ina legitimate business way and through the operation of stock pools. Some of the best mines of California have pever Allowed their stocks tobe hawked ‘about. © ‘There is no need for guch ¢ a course in the case of these small claims, if the parties ownipg them mean legitimate dusjness. It is " generally pn easy matter to raise enough joney in the ordinary way to work any,c}aim that, can show merit. “The Amador, Eureka, Pravidehce; Merrifield, Murchie, Adaho, among the California, quartz claims, and Excelsior, Milton, and N, Bloomfield among the gravel claims are fair representatives of the subject. The list might be considerably evlarged.” The above wines have furnished darge quantities of, bullion, but neither ‘of them, has: ever been under the control of stockgamblers. Outsiile of these incor-, ted by pbvivate capital, and with good r 8, There was recegtly . exhibited in San Francisco a goid bar, valued, t about $8,999, which. had just been received from a ‘gmall’ gravel claim in Placer gounty. his ground was purchased a shert time ago by a@ retifed San Franeisco merchant, and theamount paid ont for the claim and the improveifients, aggregating nearly #£0,000, has alrealy been washed out of the gravel. It is believed that theve is much more tocome. Small claims of this kind are still to-bé “had ‘in various . parts of the State, Ifsome of the Pine street to degrade the morals of the ¢ ommunity” were expended on ‘some of these undeveleped .aining claims, the change would be highly » benefiEd t ~ . time St hei :ted at bis.axpense on theglay of the Constitutional election. When the day~ of his execution was fixed by Judge Denisen, who knew wherefere they spoke stathad. not been fixed either a week before ora week after the 29th instant. This wish was expresséd in view of ‘the fact that. His wife was visiting him about 10 o’clock A. Good. ‘Gravel Claims, The Tiding says that the Godfrey mine, Alta Hill, isone of the most
important among the list.of the mining enterprises . of that district, Giving employment to about farty men, it has for years, under the careful management of Captain Godfrey, gone on the quiet tenor of its way, contributing $2,000 to $2,500 month--: ly to. the circulating medium of Grass Valley, and something it is Presumed to the pockets of its owners, though what amount we cannot par When he began work’ upon the eotaad a few years ago if was gonsidered worked out and candenmmed as worthdess by those who were ‘supposed to know the most of ‘the Alta chanpel, The gravel mining ground formerly kpown as the Lola Montez, situated adjoming the Godfrey claim, and owned by I. L. Weed, has been leased by Captain Godfrey for a term: of years, and will be opened up by tunnel. This “diggings” was once the richest perhaps of any in the vicinity, and though the cream was taken in early days it is thought there is much gold there yet. Captain Godfrey is a most thorough prospector and*during his successful management of the Godfrey mine, has learned that the old aption among the Alta channel miners that gold is only to be looked for in the “btue” gravel is-fa}lacious, The’ Captain finds it in grayel of all colors, and some in what was once gravel but now agemen$ ao hard as to require blasting to mine it out. £7 The W orkingmen deo not Claian tae the new Constitution is eg faverable to themselv they can get the New.
