P. McCafty, who was committed to jail
by Justice Barker of You Bet, for contempt
of Court, “was yesterday brought before
Judge Niles on # writ of habeas corpus,and

the defendant was garnisheed in the hands

shape of am animal made a raid on the .
chicken house of Richard White, who resides on Prospect Hill, and considerably
decreased the number of his fowls. On
visiting his chicken house ‘Tuesday morning he found that thirty young chickens and
four old hens were missing. The floor was
covered with feathers, and in a nest in P
which a hen was setting, he found only a . i
part of the body left. As the door of the
mal must have passed in through the same
hole by which the chickens enter, which is .
a very small one. _The appearance of the
house indicates that the animal devoured
them before leaviag. We do not know of
any animal so small as this one must have
been, that could eat thirty-four chickens
before its voracious appetite was satiated.
Can anybody enlighten us?
The Alaska Quartz Lode.
This lode is located very near Pike City,
in Sierra county. It was located by Messrs.
Phillips, Stewart and others about four
years ago, and after prospecting awhile they
were fortunate enough to strike paying
quartz, The have sunk down on the lode
for a distance of two hundred feet, meeting
with the most favorable resulta. It awerages four feet in width, and the rock is soft
and easily crushed. Shortly after knowing
that the rock would pay a mill was erected,
and is now in operation.
