Relief for Calaveras,
A-lottery scheme has been started at .
San Andreas_to relieve Calaveras coun«
ty of the debt now pressing upon the
people of that locality, which anmounts
depressed, enterprise paralyzed,and the
development of that county, rich in
mineral and agricultural resources, pre~
vented. ‘The managers propose to issue 200,000 tickets at $250 each, and
to return one half the entire amount
received in the shape of prizes to the
ticket holders and apply the other half,
after deducting expenses, to the pay~
ment of the county debt. There are to
be 6,458 gifts,the largest being $20,000,
$15,000, $12,000, $10,000, and so. on
down to gifts as low as $10. Certainly,
it the wealthy merchants of San Francisco were justified in relieving the
debt upon their Library building, Calaveras, Overloaded with taxes and im=
poverished in consequence of deht, ie .
justified in relieving hersel! by a similar plan. The Calaveras scheme will
be under the management of thoroughly reliable parties, and has among
ite references many of the leading men
and officers of Calaveras county. W.
‘H.Crawford has the-agency ofthe As=+
sociation for this city. ‘The advertises
ment will appear toxmorrow.
AmExcellent Panorama, “
On Saturday, to-morrow evening, our
citizens will have an opportunity of witpaintings are of superior merit, and the
scenes embrace the principal places.of
interest in a trip around the world. The .
port of departure is San Francisco, which }. ~-~ ~
is shown with the -harbor and bay, the
Sacramento river, the city, and all cities,
towns and points of interest on the Central and Union Pacific roads. Views
are given thence across the continent to
New York, London, Paris, Mount Cenis, Suez Canal, China, and across the
Pacific to San Francisco. The panoTama is accompanied by excellent mechanical effects, and all the grandeur of
a storm atsea. This panorama is said .
by those who have seen it to be one of
the finest ever exhibited on the ‘coast.
It ought to be seen by all.
A Dangerous Man. ;
In making up the ticket for the Democratic Primaries, the ticket makers had a lively little passage at arms
in regard to one of the names suggested. It was objected that they were
not certain that he was for —— first,
Jastand allthe time, and he had better not be put on. In answer to this
it was argued that if elected on a ——
ticket he would be bound to work for
—— in convention, and if he wasn’t
elected, he’d be in convention anyhow
by proxy, and in such an event he
would beat h—Il out of , 8u they
had better put him on. Not having
seen the ticket we are not advised
whether the party whose merits asa
delegate were thus discussed got on or
not.
