., Tue hoe and cultivator are the leading
implements for torn cultivation which
are not likely to be superseded. Keep
them running until the crop is ready to
be “laid by.” ae
It May not be agreeable, at all times,
to have hens running at large, but it is
their nature, and with the exercise. they
got, and the variety of food, the production of eggs is usually much increased.

Stacnant water on the farm will not
only injure the crops, but will breed
disease. Many cases of diphtheria, typhoid fever, etc., may be traced to a
want of underdrammage. » Cows drinking
such water cannot give milk pure in
quality. All. low places upon. which
water will collect should ‘receive attenon, :
A Western farmer says a common
mistake is turning cows into a pasture in
the early spring, lore there is a sufticlient supply of grass. In their search
} for better cropping they pack the soil
and destroy much grass. After there ig
& supply of graas care must be taken to
allow only a limited range at firat,
Enos farmers’ think that ensilage
may be pes ae by being pressed very
compactly into bales. ‘They state that in
Belgium it is customary to bale it. The
Outer portions of the bale, however,, become slightly injured, which may be
avoided by using straw for an outer covering, which may be also pressed with
the ensilage.
THE most money to be derived from
sheep keeping is by raising mutton and
wool together. A lamb that will bring
+5 returns seven timés ad mtich’ profit as
one calf can do, and seven 20-month-old
-wethers that bring $40 to $50 will pay
twice as well ‘as a ¢ow or steer at that}:
price, excluding the value of the wool.
As-regards mutton, there can be no competition against the farmers, as there is
“with beef, {gr mutton iseskentially a farm
product,
Tue oat crop is too generally treated
as of little consequence and olten sown

Potatoes.
New comers to this country are apt to
to bring their old home prejudices with
them,@#id*to think they have nothing to
learn, but, on the contrary, can teach the
natives something. Such an idea occurred to a Scotch farmer last year, who,
ainst advice and warning, persisted in
planting his crop of potatoes in high
ridges. This is a good plan in Scotland,
where the fields are olten under water
for days successively, and helps to keep
the crop out of the wet. But in our dry
climate these raised ridges dry right
through ; a shower runs cown the dry
slopes without moistening them, and the
potatoes never get past their early stage
or larger than hickory nuts. Flat cultivation and deep planting are necessary
here, and old American farmers may do
well to consider this fact, wiich applies
equally to corn, as well ag new comers
who are not to our manner born,
Farm Management.
No fixed rules can be laid down for
the management for farms. ‘The soil of
one township may be best fitted for
growing some kinds of grain, while the
adjoining ones can be most profitably
devoted to live stock. No two farnis
situated side by side are excactly alike.
The distance from market, the demand
for special produ ts, and, not the least,
the individual taste of the farmer, have
all much weight in determining the
system of farm management that it is
best to adopt. Those who have given
the most thought to this subject are the
slowest to advise any general system to
be applied to every farm. It is like a
garment that is intended’ to fit ail persons and suit none. . very year of progress made in agricultural knowledge
teaches more forcibly than previous
ones the truth that a farmer must rely
much upon his own intelligence and
judgment in working out the best system for his own farm. Even in so seemingly trifing a matter as the pruning of
& grape vine, the wisest vineyardist can
only give general rules, and each, grape
grower must adapt them to the peculiarities af each vine.
~ Careful Transplanting.
In orcharding, careful planting and
proper preparation of the soil are to be
relied on as leading to ultimate success ;
thorough work in these are necessary to
insure abundant returns and rewards.
This, probably, was not so essential in
the early practice of pomology in this
country.@@ihen we had a climate much
more. moist and the elements, of plant
food and fruiting abundant almost to excess. Nurseries were few and limited in
extent ; seed! _were themain—reliance, and the planter had only to use
his mattock in ing and preparing
shallow places for the trees, His young
trees were taken from one place and imediately planted in another, or they
ni) . 8tesv up accidentally anywhere and received. such shallow cultivation as was
then practiced, not only for but for
tho cereal and other crops. The trees
raised in this way were both healthy and
vigorous, and many attained great size
aae-gent age, They wero generally set
near van Higa td they also, had the
advan extra food that abounds
about houses. Thus we see the
change of climate ‘and other circumstances attendi tlie ee of
the country and gradual exhaustion of the virgin soil, force as to
manure and prepare the soil in the best
manner, so as to secure humus and moisture and give our trees tho food nature
in! for them. Oe

CURE OF
CANCER and ULCERS.
Judge T. C, McLendon writes to the Swift
Specific Co., Atlanta, Ga., under date of February 14, 1888: * About threo years ago, Jerry
Bradley, a colored man, had a cancerous sore
on his face, near the right eye. It caused
him a great deal of pain, and he lost the sight
of the eye, but was finally cured of the cancer
by the use of Swift's Specific. This case is
well known in Wilkes Co., Ga, where he lived
(near Danbury), and of this case, I, myself,
had personal knowledge.” 2
Mr. L. Cox, of Arkabutla, Tate Oo., Miss,
writes, February 24, 1888; “ I suffered a great
deal from old ulcers for six years. Your medicine was recommended to me, and after
using six bottles, I was completely oured. I
never saw its equal as a Blood Purifier, My
neighbors will use no other, Your medicine

Mrs. A. M. Goldsmith, No, 674 Warren 8t,

believe it was the means of saving Ufe.
The doctor told me I had a throat
similar to General. Grant's, I cheerfully
recommend it to all suffering from disordered blood. I use it now asa tonio whenever I think I need it.”
Mr. B. F. George, Milford P. 0., Ellis Co,
Texas, writes: “I had a cancerous wart or
iole on my eyelid, as large as the end of my
thumb, which had the appearance of cancer,
causing me much pain and inflammation,
from which I suffered along time. Seeing
the 8, 8. 8, advertised I commenced using it,
and after the use of a few bottles the sore
dropped out, my cancer was gone, and I was

Mr. G. W, Pettis, of Aikin, 8. O., writes: “I
