_ NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA,
LOCAL INTELLIGENCE,
SENTENCE OF PRIsoNERS.—Yester~~ day morning the prisoners convicted of
_.time during vhe, term. of the Connty.
Court. were brought up _
h Fook, convicted of entering a house
__in the day time with-intent-to-rob; was:
sentenced to one year in the State’s
Prison. See
Chas. Richardson, who was tried for
grand larceny in stealing a. carpet, at
‘Truckee, was sentenced to two years’
imprisonment in the State’s Prison.
Baker, who participated_in the crime
with Richardson, was sentenced for the
game length of time at the last term of
the Court. _ ce eae
E. Lee, one of the parties engaged in
the attempt to rob Burckhalter & Co’s
bank, at Truckee, who was convicted of
burglary, was next brought in. When
asked by the Judge if he had anything”
to say why sentence.should not be pronounced, the prisoner walked to the
front of the -bar, and commenced a
lengthy speech. He reviewed the evidence in the case, comparing the testimony of Forrest, who turned State’s
evidence, as he gave it at. the examination before the Justice and again in the
County Court, pointing out all the discrepancies, and denouncing Forrest as a
perjured villain who had, though
young, forfeited all claim to honor-and
virtue. He reflected on the conduct of
the jury and officers of the law, declaring that he had been persecuted as well
as prosecuted. He said he was not
guilty of burglary, and that if the jury
had done as they should, he would have ;
been at liberty. After he. concluded,
Judge Niles stated, in effect, that the
convicted was without extenuationThey went to this place, armed with
pistols, with the design of committing
a robbery, and their weapons were discharged, and he had no doubt it was!
the:intention to carry out tle purpose
of robbery even to the extremity of
taking life. _He, therefore, felt bound
in justice to sentence the prisoner for
the full term ‘of ten years, the limit of
the law. On hearing his sentence Lee
spoke about as fellows: “Your-—Henor,
should you have another case before
you, on such: evidence, Ido hope, that
tor your own conscience sake, you wil!
bea little moreténienter; not that I
carea d——<n for my liberty, put for
yourown sake.” At this point his remarks were interrupted by Sheriff Gentry, who conducted the prisoner to jail.
Miss Mornison’s Lecrure.—Quite
@ number listened to the lecture of Miss
Anna Morrison, at the Court House, on
Tuesday evening. After giving a briet
stajement of the misfortunes which induced her to become a lecturer, she delivered quite a fine discourse en the
subject, “Woman as a Lecturer,” claiming that there was no impropriety in
woman entering upon any field of labor
80 long as'she did not violate the laws
of morality. She gave some good hits
against those of her sex, who, while
they spend all their time in studying
how to dress, denounced their stronger
minded sisters for endeavoring to cultivate their minds, asking “Whether it
was more ‘creditable to cultivate chignons than the brain?’ . The young
lady has-a-free, full veice, a good delivery, and is destined to make a popuJar lecturess.
Writing ScHoot.—A Rost, late of
Dyhrenfurth College will organize a
writing school at Temperance Nall,this
evening, and will give instruction in
penmanship ‘and bookkeping. He has
already given private lessons for one
term in this city and his pupils show
marked improvement. We have examined specimens written by Anna
Blasauf. Jas. Hubbard and Caroline
‘Weiss, none of whom had written before, and in one course they have learned to write a round full hand, forming
all the letters well. The terms and
times when Mr. Rost will give lessons:
may be found in the advertisement.
