{ _ -w euccess, A ts There is no use quarreling about is “TRE DAILY TRANSCRIPT ah ecteerpmers einen emsemrerer BROWN & CALKINS, Prop’rs. N. P. BROWN..... Business ‘Manager a LEONARD 8. CALKINS §...,..Editor Nevada County Oicial Pros, SUNDAY, MAY 27. ——_—_—_——_—_—_—_—_—_———_——————— THE FAIR BUSINESS. Union: ‘‘In reply to the statement “of the Union that there was no disposition manifested at Nevada City to promote the holding of the District Fair after the Directors of the Association decided to have the pavilion at Grass Valley the present season, the TRANscRIPY ,Yeturns with the statement that a subscription was raised there of $1,950 in a few hours, on the understanding that the pavilion was-to be located there, and publishes the list of names showing this generous. subscription, and seeks to carry the inference from this that Nevada ‘Ci ty is ready to help to’ carry the Fair through. So it appears that the subscription hed a condition to it, which meant that if. Nevada City could have its own way the subscribérs would be generous, but otherwise, otherwise; 20 it turned out Now it could not be known inadvance what would be the decision of the Directors of the Association, but when they met they decided to hold the Fair at Glenbrook, and located for the first year the pavilion at Grass Valley and for the second year at Nevada City. Immediately upoh the announcement of this the very liberal subscription list which th TRANSCRIPT presents shrank so rapidly that it is not’ known to-day what sum it represents, as $109 and $50 subscriptions went down to $5 each or nothing, according to the disappointment or disposition o1 the subscriber, and not a half dozen were willing to stand to their original amounts, so that it cannot be said to-day there is $100 absolutely pledged in that place for holding the’ Fai: in Nevada county for the current year. Itis therefore ill grace for the Transcrirt to draw a contrast between that subscription and the imaginary oe that it presents for Grass Valley in the way of a slur, or to ask in detail what this or that business in this place will contribute to the holding of the Fair. If the Fair is to be holden things must be done on business principtes, and there is no time for delays, There are parties in Grass Valley, (several of them) who stand ready to purchase the Glenbrook property, and take desirable terms witli the Association astoleasing the Fair grounds, so that a purchuse of the property by, ‘the Assdciatiou need not be necessary, and Grass Valley is ready to put up $2,000 for holding the Fair, to be expended under the direction of the Association, Now what will Nevada City do?” We are more than ever convinced that the Fair will never be made a success by newspaper talk alone, It takes money to do the business, So _ the Transonrer will‘present o few more truths and then sit down till it finds out where the coin is to come from, The tcouble seems to be that the people of Grass Valley want the people of Nevada City to contribute to & common fund out of which, amon other things,a pavilion is to be built at the former town. We hold that the pavilion should be maintained entirely by the people of the town where all the benefits in a business Way are derived. , The Union asks;-“W hat will Neva: da City do?” As state:! in the:e-cole umns heretofore, let Grass Vale say what it wants to give toward: the Park fund, and Nevada City will within twenty-four hours contributs an equal amount to the came fund, the understanding being that it be expended under direction of the Association’s officers and for no--other purpose than that specified, — The Transcript does not question the enterprise or generosity of th: citizens of Grass Valley, but is of the opinion that they do not as a rule care to have the pavilion there this year, because there is no suitabl: public hall in the community. They apparently reason ‘that by another year private capital will have furnished a suitable structure, and then they can at a reasonable cost, have a creditable exhibition, Therefore they ask, Why not let. Nevaila City, where there already isa Hall second in size ano convenience to none in the State, hav: the indoor display. this Fall and we will take it next, -. Thus, we believe, do the mass of Grass Valleyans think to themselves _ about this thing. But there are-afew (like the man who in war times was willing to do. what he could for his country, even if he had. to sacrificc all his wife’s relations on the bloody batle field,) who are trying to do that which the. many don’t want to; and although the Few doubtless understand the pulee of the Mony by thie time, and if. they’ can realiz anything realize that they are ‘up~—-—hholding a forlorn hope, * they stu'-, bornly refuse to toe the mark like . Men and say to Nevada City; *‘Have. the pavilion at your town this year, **‘gnd we will wait till next time.” Ii do eay this, Nevada City will __ willtake it, expenses and all, and do 7 this matter, and no one up this way THE DUTCH FLAT APOSTATE: " The apostacy of thé’ Dutch Flat brought‘duwn upon that sheet the contempt of those people who have at heart the best interests of the locality where it is published. The ostensible editor of the Times is a gentleman named Wheeler, and he has heretofore been an earnest advocate of the Miner Association, as would be naturally expected of a mau living ina rich gold pro.lucing region. The real author of the senseless tirades appearing as editorials in his paper for two weeks past, is said to be one E. L. McClure, who has been engaged in Dutch Flat at various times as banker, express agent, telegraph operator, aud the Lord only knows what not, but who is now, we believe, like Othello, without an’ occupation. This man McClure has un irrepressible itching to be known as.a great writer, One of his neighbors says he used to have an ambition to be .employed by. the Miners Association to get up pamphlets and the like setting forth their side of the case, but they did not consider his services necessary.— Some thmk the Association made a wistake ia failing to retain him in theif behalf, but after reading his late efforts we are inclined to the opinion that. to have him on the other side is the miners’ gain and the ti-miners’ loss, We can honestiy say the same as to the Times, A GERMAN newspaper says the number of people living in Paris who speak the German language is 110,000, which makes Paris. the fifteenth largest German city in point of population. Of these 110, 00 about 70,000 belong to the German Empire, the ~ remainder being Austrians, Swise,Alsatians, German-Russians and German-Americans, Poor Davwin felt to the day of his death that his theory was incomplete because he had not discovered the missing link. Had he lived a little longer he might have seen a dude and died happy. *: Aw Eastern merchant, who. never advertises, was found lying dead on the counter of his store recently. It was-thought-the-bedy had laid several days before being discovered. BORN. At Grass Valley, May 20th, 1883,to'Thomas Penna, a daughter. NEVADA THEATRE.
