Lanp Sreaine.—Ar-map of Town: & grantof the California and Oregon railroad. This survey covers the land on the ridge, including. French Corral, Birchville, Sweetland, and extending up to within a mile of North San Juan. This land is described on the map as “rough mountain land, unfit for cultivation,” when it is well known to every man in the county that the district contains not only some of the most valuable mines in the State, but also some of the best ranches and finest agricultural lands. Some one happened tofind a hand-bill, stating that the plat had been filed, and. but for this accident. the whole of this country might have been passed over to the railroad com. Immediately on ascertaining the the miners and settlers called a at Birchville, to adopt some plan vo sedure their rights. This meeting was held on ‘Tuesaday evening, and about seventy were present, H. P, Sweetland was President, and John 8. Stidger, Secretary. A committee consisting of W. M. Eddy ot French: Corral, D. Alexander of Em; pire Flat, H. Everett of Birchville, J. 8. Stidger of Sweetland and John Hueston of Sebastopol, were authorised to take such steps as.may-be necessary to protect the interests of the lund holders, and also to levy an assessment. This attempt by the railroad company to steal the best lands of the county will be resisted by all lawful means by the people, ag it ought to be. The fact has transpired) since this question arose, that no survey had ever been made of the lands on this side of the Yubs, and the Committee will take steps to have the map rejected and a survey made. The grant-was made to the railroad in erefore the rights which hi THE SPRAKERS.—A. A, Sargent, E. W. Roberts, M: D. Boruck and other speakers, will address the Union ratifiCresk. Two and a-half miles above bottom, can be seen an outwash of Flat ditch crosses the Dutch Flat road the Murchie brothers have opened a short cut and tunnel leading to the channel, and have washed away about an acre of the gravel the past Winter with excellent resulta. Theyalso: -selected about twenty tors of Hoat quartz rock which-yielded $50 per ton. From investigations already tmade the existence of a great ancient river channel, extending from the Casciiles to Gold termine ite precise course, it will require a large outlay of capital to find. it by tunnels or shafts. We do ‘not understand why the plan of prospecting for these hidden deposits by buring in the same manner as for artesian wells might not be successfully adopted, The expense of tests made in this way would be, in our opinion, a great saving over the present method of prospecting.” of the Sacramento Union of yesterday, of prospecting has been done in the vicinity of the Cascades, oh Deer Creck, and that the mining done in that vicinity has been attended with most excellent results. We learn from the Wational that this range extends from the Cascades nearly to Nevada,a distance of about nine miles, terminating on Little Deer Creek. The National says: “The entire ridge from the Cascades to’ with volcanic. ash, lava or cement. These'subsequent deposits completely the water to wear away and find a new outlet for escapein what is now known as Deer Creek. The reason for this volcanic covering not being washed ; away sooner, is that it is less susceptible to the influence -of water, time, or the ‘atmosphere, than the soft granite or “bed rock.” At Quaker Hill the covering of the channel has been worn away revealing an extensive deposit of gravel. Two miles west of Quaker Hill, the rim rock inclosing the channel, has given away, and an outflow ‘of gravel has occurred, the greater portion of which has found its way into Deer mill, a shaft was sunk on this gravel range toa depth of 111 feet through the yoleanic deposit, striking gravel, which prospected well, but Water ridge from this shaft, and lower than its the same channel. The name of the brute is Thomas Anderson. We have no desire to give the details of the affair. Any one may gratify their curiosity by consulting the paper before named. We only refer to it to say that this Thomas Anderson is, undoubtedly, the same man who, under the same name, was brought before the last Grand Jury of this county on a charge of stabbing a man, whose name we do not at this. moment recall, at Coburn’s Station. Anderson isa man of medium height, full, large eyes, and has the evidences of dissipation about him. His wife-is ‘as worthless as himself. He is a gas fitter by trade. The evidence against him was not deemed sufficient by the Grand Jury to warrant an attempt to convict him for the crime alleged to have been committed by him at Coburn’s Station ; yet that he plunged a rat-tail file into his antagonist is pretty certain. THE famous Chassepot rifle, to whch “the Sovereign Pontift” is probably indebted for his present exercise of the temporal power, is considered in Euthe most efficient fire-arm yet invented. ‘The French Minister of War has instracted all the generals comvisions to exercise their came in so rapidly that it had to be. abandoned, A short distance up the SEVERELY InsuRnED.—We learn from was severely injured by being ran over The following are the particalars:-— Haven, was driving a four-horse team, attached to a heavy wagon, through the woods, when.two of the horses becoming scared, started to run, throwing Haven out of the wagon.
