railroad. This survey covers the land
on the ridge, including. French Corral,
Birchville, Sweetland, and extending up
to within a mile of North San Juan.
This land is described on the map as
“rough mountain land, unfit for cultivation,” when it is well known to
every man in the county that the district contains not only some of the most
valuable mines in the State, but also
some of the best ranches and finest
agricultural lands. Some one happened

the whole of this country might have
been passed over to the railroad com. Immediately on ascertaining the
the miners and settlers called a

about seventy were present,
H. P, Sweetland was President,
and John 8. Stidger, Secretary. A
committee consisting of W. M. Eddy
ot French: Corral, D. Alexander of Em;

Stidger of Sweetland and John Hueston of Sebastopol, were authorised to
take such steps as.may-be necessary to
protect the interests of the lund holders,
and also to levy an assessment. This
attempt by the railroad company to
steal the best lands of the county will
be resisted by all lawful means by the
people, ag it ought to be. The fact has
transpired) since this question arose,
that no survey had ever been made of
the lands on this side of the Yubs, and
the Committee will take steps to have
the map rejected and a survey made.

a large outlay of capital to find. it by
tunnels or shafts. We do ‘not understand why the plan of prospecting for

be, in our opinion, a great saving over
the present method of prospecting.”
of the Sacramento Union of yesterday,
of prospecting has been done in the
vicinity of the Cascades, oh Deer Creck,
and that the mining done in that vicinity has been attended with most excellent results. We learn from the Wational that this range extends from the
Cascades nearly to Nevada,a distance
of about nine miles, terminating on
Little Deer Creek. The National says:

as Deer Creek. The reason for this
volcanic covering not being washed ;
away sooner, is that it is less susceptible
to the influence -of water, time, or the

“bed rock.” At Quaker Hill the covering of the channel has been worn
away revealing an extensive deposit of
gravel. Two miles west of Quaker

gravel has occurred, the greater portion
of which has found its way into Deer

contain am account of the horrible
beating by a man of his wife. The
name of the brute is Thomas Anderson.
We have no desire to give the details of
the affair. Any one may gratify their
curiosity by consulting the paper before
named. We only refer to it to say that
this Thomas Anderson is, undoubtedly,
the same man who, under the same
name, was brought before the last
Grand Jury of this county on a charge
of stabbing a man, whose name we do
not at this. moment recall, at Coburn’s
Station. Anderson isa man of medium
height, full, large eyes, and has the
evidences of dissipation about him.
His wife-is ‘as worthless as himself. He
is a gas fitter by trade. The evidence
against him was not deemed sufficient
by the Grand Jury to warrant an attempt to convict him for the crime
alleged to have been committed by him
at Coburn’s Station ; yet that he plunged
a rat-tail file into his antagonist is
pretty certain.
