SS . charged with committing a rape. The Tlie’ Mail” Grinserip NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, _ . = ee Lie =< = LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, HELD To ANSWER.—James Smollon, who stabbed Reayan and’ killed Bo: hannan at Eureka, on Sunday night, was examined before Justice Ballard, on Wednesday last, and committed to jail to await the action of the next Grand Jury. He was brought down by Constable Conn yesterday, * and lodged in the county jail. The facts elicited on examination showed that an old feud existed between the partics in consequence of Bohannan refusing to give Smolion credit at his store last Winter. They met at Pat. Hays’ saloon on Sunday night, and a quarrel ensued, when Bohannan dared Smollon to go outand fight him. The latter refused, and the quarrel ended for a time. Bohannan going out, Smollon went to the back part of the saloon and took out a large pocket knife with which he was cutting tobacco to fill his pipe, when Bohannan returned, and the quarrel was resumed, Smollon keeping his seat.-One word brought on ‘another until Smolion received a blow in the tace;.which was immediately followed . by a scuffle and the cutting. The prisoner is an old man, probably forty-five, and his a ance does not indicate that he is a desperate character. ALARM OF Fine.—The alarm of fire on Wednesday night was occasioned by the burning of a chimney on Pine street. The fire blazed out at the top and made a brilliant light. ‘When the bells rang there was a general shutting ' of iron doors, and almost immediately the streets were filled with people. Our citizens have suffered so much from fire that an alarm creates great consternation. As the dry season approaches the greatest care should be taken to guard against fire, and it would be well for the City Trustees—to—authoriseeither} <. the City Marshal or the Chief Engineer of the Fire Department to inspect the chimneys and flues and see that they are in good condit Oe eas ConvierEp:—Robert Tyler, charged with rape, was convicted in the County Court on Wednesday last. The case Was prosecuted by District Attorney Cross and defended by J. I. Caldwell.— Tyler was a preacher and the guardian of Ellen Dorsey upon whom he was Birl at the time — was committed was about years of age, and her testimony stated that she did " not disclose ‘the fact because she was intimidated by Tyler. The complaint was made soon after she was released fromhim. Tyler appeared to think that he had committed no great offence and that his trial was a “persecution,” The parties are both colored. Tyler. : was ordered to appear for sentence on! Saturday morning at 10 o’clock. BEAUTIFUL MARBLE ORNAMENTS.
