Che Daily Brangeript NEVADA (CITY; CA =~ ——— —— Tesco, May, 29, 1877.“Phe ‘-Herald’’ Seats. The Placer Herald, in its issue of published an_ article. May "19th, headed “Truth vs. Puff,’’ wherein; the brilliant editor set forth thut the papers of Nevada _‘‘talkee too muchee”’ about the prospects of the’ _ county, and endeavored to:show that it was Placer county that was ‘way up’’ and not Nevada. Many insinuations were thrown out, wLich the Grass Valley Union and the Transinuations were not truv. We went for the Herald’s scalp, and in our article we stated we did not believe the editor of that paper bad ever erossed the Placér county lide into our county, else he would have known. better than to have writIn the Herald of the 19th, we find the ‘hoy team. en such affarticle. erald . a _ the “boy teamster?”’ ster’ gots. aftec us in the following style: “In our article last idk: headed “Truth vs. Poff,” though we aimed to touch. the Nevada papers a little on their ‘‘paffy’’ propensities, we had no intention of runnibg down that large, rich, prosperous and growing county. On the contrary we kept steadily in view the one idea of making it appear as it is, big, rich and prosperous. Still the papers over there came back at us like “‘muchly’’ disturbed hornets. Itis too bad their : “stingers are not long enough to reach us. The Nevada Transcript even goes so far as todeclare that in its opinion we were never in-that county in our life. The @eclaration is rich. We wondér what boy it was that from 1860 to 1865 was known in both Nevada City and Grass Valley, and in nearly every other mining town in that county, as Who was it “that used to sell grain and hay to Campbell iu Grass Valley, and buy lumber from Leech, of the Mohawk “mill? Who was it mistook Mills, of Nevada, for a Washoe teamster, and refused to sell him a load of barley unless he would pay five cents a hundred more than the merchants and stable men would give? Who was at Rich’s (the Hulf Mile House) the night Nevada City burnt down last? Who hauled hay and barley for Jim McCue to every stationfrom-Nevada—to the Summit (down the South Yaba Hill: and all) the time he was making things hot for the old C.S.C.? Who camped one night at the Sugar Loaf? Who broke a wagon tongue one dark night, in Selby Flat? Who knew. Arnold, hotel keeper at Lake City, and Leavy of the same plice, later of Moore’s Flut? And by the way, -who hauled mnch of the hardware for McLavghlin’s new quartz mill at Allison Ranch? And who got inte a little row with old Hennessy of the same “place over a box. of tobacco ~ Ahat aim had delivered and ra Hennessy Said he had not, and wanted to retain the freight morey, to pay for it? Why, dear Mr. Brown, we know more of your town and the country around there than we “know of the town we were born in. If anything farther was wanted we. might tell about browipg dust on leaky coal oil cans consigned to. Gregory & Waite; about borrowing peaches out of-the Penn Valley orchard, without ask* ing for them; getting sick at Wallings, Rough and Ready; capturing a “road agent’’ near the Indian Springs, or helpiug ourself to apples from the orepard at Blue Tent, but -we think it is nut necessary, The ditor of the Herald has never been (1 Nevada county, en? Well just keep on thinking sv.”’. That jets usout-—we thought the editor of the ‘‘Herald’ was a city chap instead of tHE™boy teamater.” Tae last office-which une friend is supposed to perfurm for: another, after the breath has left the other's body, is to close his eyes.
