friday Morning’s Fire.
The fire departrrent was called out
shortly after three o’clock Friday
morning by the burning of a board
shanty on Nimrod street belonging to
and occupied by Jennie Anderson, one
of the oldtimers of the demi monde
class. The fire had gained stich headway whenit was discovered that nothing more than the scanty furniture in
two of the rooms could be saved, and
the firemen did not unreel their bose.
Ed Moore was one of the ‘first to see
the fire and being first at the house
awakened the woman -who helped
him and-Mr. Bowerman: who arrived
a little later tosavé some of the chairs,
bedding, etc. ‘The loss is perhaps
$300. Jennie says she had $400 in-. .
surance, but there isa report to the
effect ‘that. the policy expired a few
weeks ago. Jennie, being homeless,
has applied for admission to the
county hospital.

AN OFFICIAL VISIT.
Mrs. Stamafield’s Geception at
Piacervilie.
ihe Mountain Democrat, published
at Placerville, El Dorado county, says
. in its issue of last Saturday :
“FallenPéaf Chapter No. 90, Order
of the Eastern Star, had the pleasure
at its last regular meeting, Monday
evening, May 13th, of entertaining the
District Deputy Grand Matron, Mra.
Stansfield, of Nevada Citv. The Hal]
had been tastefully decorated in honor
of the event, and presented an attrac
tive appearance. Against the bright
crimson of the canopy in the East, at
the station of the Worthy Matron, Mrs.
H.8. Morey, was placed the monogram
of the order in flowers of contrasting
colors; the desk was covered with a
mass of flowers and vines, and set
pieces in cutflowers adorned each
corner of the dais. In the West, at
the station of the Associate Matron,
Mrs. J. Combellack, the decorations
were similar, except that on the dark
-blue of this‘canopy, was a Jarge star of
pure white blossoms. The stations of
the officers were all ornamented with
flowers in color and design appropriate
to the different dezrees represented,
and the whole effect was pleasing in
the extreme.
‘A large number of the members
were present to meet Mrs. Stansfield,
and were favorably impréssed by the
lady, whois a fluent speaker of easy
presence. Her remarks were. very
complimentary in regard to the Chap
ter, particularly so of the work of its
Conductress, Mrs. P. Papini.
“At the conclusion of the routine
work, a numberof guests were invited
in and ice cream, cake. ahd. strawberries served in.abundance by the ladies ;
short speeches were made by. Messrr.
Irwin, Barss, Hume and Skinner, and
by Mrs. Prewett; a visiting memberof
Aubura, John McF. Pearson favored the Company witha Scotch song,
and Miss Mollie Carpenter added tu
the enjoymeft by. giving a voc.i solo.
Bon-bons were passed and a motley
array of head gedr soon adorned those
present, the most becoming being
secured by C. H. Weatherwax and
George Burnham. This brought the
entertainment to a close, and departures were nade, all well satisfied
with the result of the visit of the Distriet Deputy.”

Dull Times onthe Comstock.
Nevada City is not the only town
that is growling about a depression in
business circles. The Virginia City
Chroniele.of Wednesday has this:
“There is general complaint among
local business men of unusually dull
times, and they are at a logs to assign
a cause for it. The monthly pay-rolls
are larger than usual at this time of
the year, but where the quarter of a
million income goes to—tbat Vanishes
so quickly after it is disbursed, is an
unsolved mystery, unless the theory
is excepted that the recipients are
hoarding it.”

Delicious ice Cream.
Misses Leddy ard Cree of the Commercial street restaurant. sent to. the
Transcerrr office Friday with their
compliments some very rich and finely-flavored ice cream: Now-that the
warm weather has come the ladies are
prepared to furnish their patrons with
large or small quantites of this refreshing and palatable luxury.
Iuteresting Exercises.
meee
The ‘Grand Army Day” memorial
exercises held by the city schools Fri
day afternoon were very interesting
and highly creditable to teachers and
pupils. In most of the departments
there was carried out a beautiful floral
exercise entitled *‘Memorial of the
States.” “Numerous citizens were
present as spectators.
A Good Appointment.

People Kead Them.
Newspaper readers do not slight the
advertisements. They have come to
realize that the advertisements in a
newspaper represent the goods which
the merchants have for sale, and they
take means to familiarize themselves
with what storekeepers have to offer.
Moreover, the consituency of a paper
are very apt to be governed by what
they read in theirown paper. If the
paper is accepted, in its political,
moral and intellectual tone, as our
home paper, its advertisers share the
respect and coufidence bestowed upon
the paper itself. This is an important
fact for advertisers to remember; at
the same time it calls for the exercise
en the part of the newspaper publishers of great care in the admission of
advertisements. :
An Ostrich Farm.
Sells Brothers recently bought all
the ostriches on the famous Santa Ana,
California, ostrich farm and earry*the
fell flock of birds with their show.
They intend to establish at the close of
the season an ostrich farm either at
Columbas, Ohio, or Topeka, Kansas,
at both of which cities they have vast
real estate possessions. An experienced keeper travels with the birds
and explains the details of ostrich
breeding. The feathers of these birds
last year were sold to a New York firm
for $15,000, but this year they were
not plucked and their beautiful plainage attracts the admiration of ai] who
see them.
Clear the Way
Without loss of time when the intestinal
canal is blocked up by reason of constipation, chronic or temporary.” It
should be borne in mine that this ailment is prone to become lasting and
obstinate, and breed other and worse
complaints. Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is the precise remedy to remove
the obstruction effectually, bur without
drenching or weakening the blockaded
bowels, a consequence always to be apprehended from the use of violent
laxatives, which are among the most
pernicious of the-.cheap nostrums
swallowed by the credulous and
misinformed. The fiat of experience,
and of the medical fraternity, sanction
the claims of this standard aperient.
Not only as asource of relief and permanent regularity to the bowels, liver

Proper amount of lizht. A practitioner
will not attempt the diagnusis of a complicated disease unless he can see the
sufferer and make an examination upon
which to base his opinion relative to the
course of treatment necessary to bring
about a complete restoration of health.
Notwithstanding. tha impropriety of
such action there seems.to bea great
deal of doctoring done in the dark.
By this it is not intended that a literal
meaning be inferred, but. that a yreat
many mistakes are-committed because of
the darkness whith is the result.of ignonance. It needs no illustration to demonstrate that gross iznorance has caused
many fatal mistakes to be made in the
trea'nieut of diseases by those who profess to be learned in tne art of healing.
In many diseases several organs are
more or less implicated and what seems
& primary ailment may be one quite remote. For instance, a severe headache
may have its orizin in a disturbed stomach. On the other han i, sickness at
the stomach may be caused by a blow on
the head. The veat of typhoid fever is
in the upper }.art of the bowels, but most
of its worst symptoms are ‘often in the
brain.
Symptoms of disease as well as diseases
theinselves are of:entimes followers or.
concomitants of some tinstispected organic disease and this is peculiarly true of
lung, liver, brain and heart diseases in
general, for itis now known that they
are the result of kidney disease, which
shows its presence in some such indirect
manner.
Several years azo a gentleman became
convinced of the truth of this and through
his efforts the world has been warned of
kidney disea-e and as a result of continued effort a specific known as Warner’s
Safe Cure was discovered, the general
use of which has shown it to be of inestimable benefit in all cases where kidney
treatment is desirable or necessary.
When .consumption is threatened see
to it that the condition of the kidneys is
imme tiately inquired into and’ if they
are found disedbed, cure them by an immediate use of Warner’s Safe Cure and
the symptoms of lung decay will rapidly
disappear. + Se
There are too many instances already
