A Visit tothe State Fish Hatchery
at Shebley’s.
The TRANscriet reporter yesterday paid a visit to Joseph Shebley’s
farm on the line of the Narrow
Gauge Railroad fifteen and « half
miles below this city, where was ¢stablished last spring a State fish
hatchery. An hour’s inspection ‘of
the premises and a careful investigation asto the management of the
hatchery, was sufficient to satisfy
the seribe that no mistake had been
made by the Commissioners in _ the
selection of.the location and the appointment of the Superintendent.
In the spacious building on the west
bank of the largest of the two arti‘ficial reservoirs that adorn the beautiful valley which Mr. Shebley has
been cultivating for the past sixteen
years, till it now blooms like a ross,
is the spacious building where most
of the work isdone. Ranged crossways of the building are fourteen
long hatching boxes, in double rows,
with passage ways around them.
The boards of which thease boxes are
made have until recently been painted, but now as new ones are added
they are submitted toa carbonizing
process which gives better results
than the old way did. The bottoms of them are spread with clean
to hold the eggs. A bountiful supply of water, brought down in pipes
from a spring on the mountain side,
is conducted through these. boxes
(which are slightly elevated at one
end) and over the eggs, passing off at
the lower end into the trout-brook
that feeds the reservoirs. The water
is kept at a temperature of
from 55 to 56 degrees Farenheit.
The full process of artificial. incubation is one that must be seen to
be understood. “A brief newspaper
description, hastily written, would
afford but little satisfaction to those
who understand the subject, and
could be of no benefit to those who
donot, Whatwe desire to present
particularly to the public is the fact
that this year’s work at Shebley’s
has been crowned with unqualified success under the excellent
management of I. C. Frazier, the
gentleman in charge, who has
had ten or twelve years’ valuable
experience as a pisciculturiet, and
understands his business thoroughly
in all details. Of thirty thousand
land-locked salmon eggs brought
from Buckport, Maine, twenty-eight
thousand have been hatched, and
the little fellows are now ready for
shipment. A large number of McCloud river trout eggs from the U.
S. Fishery at Baird, Shasta county,
have also been received this spring
and are doing equally well. Some
of them are hatched, others are
hatching, and still other lots have
been but just ‘‘set.”
The capacity of the institution is
auch that 700,000 eggs can be hatched at one plant. So far this year
75,000 have been brought out in good
shape, and Superintendent Frazier
hopes to increase the number to half
a million before the season closes,
The main drawback so far has been
a scarcity of spawn, but he will go
to Lake Fehoo in a few.days and obtain a supply there by resorting to
what is known as “‘stripping.” ‘

John Lawrence, the foandryman
of this city, has a hen that would be
a credit to any country or any age.
The other day it laid an~egg measuring 84 inches around it one way,
and G4 inches the other, and
it did not. feel
that day, either. The versatility of
Mr. Lawrence’s hen is another point
worthy of note. Every time it lays
one of these big eggs, such as deseribed above, it goes to the other
extreme on the following day and
lays an egg not larger than a robin’s.
Every month of 30days Mr. Lawrence gets from its nest 15 big eggs
and 15 little ones. It never misses
fire, and instead of cackling over its
remarkable feats, it crows. Nevada
City is proud of that hen.

Henry K Field, General Agent
for the Pacific Coast, of the New
England Mutual Life Insurance
Company, left here yesterday
for Truckee. Mr. Field is
makin @ tout of his agencies in
this section of the State, and finds
them generally in a prosperous condition. Under his supervision the
New England Mutual has obtained
@ prominence on the Coast second to
that of no life insurance company.
In this pact of the State they have
recently written a large number of
tisks, confining their business to
the best classes of citizens. This
is the oldest purely mutual life insurance company in the country,
having been chartered in 1835. It
has a worthy representative in Mr.
Field, who has many warm personal
friends allthrough the mountain
counties, and by his square methods
of doing business wins the confidence
of all with whom he~has dealings.
The best evidence of his popularity is
the success which the company has
met with inthis neighborhood. It
is unprecedented here in the life in-. surance business, Beyond a doubt,
Mr; Field is the right man in the
right place. ;

on-account of the ruination, by the

Tricky Boys.
Sheriff Tompkins now rings the
curfew bell every evening at 8 o’clock
sharp, and straightway the streets
are apparently cleared of idle and
mischievous boys. We say ‘‘apparently” cleared, but appearances in
this case, as in many others, are misleading. Some of the boys have for
their protection from the arm of the
law after eight o’clock nice looking
parcels made by wrapping up old tin
cans, bricks and other debris in paper
and when interviewed by the police
puton an innocent look and say
their mothers know they are out,
The officers having learned their little game, will hereafter have them at

Claims Arising out of a Debris Suit.
A motion to set aside the execution issued against the Excelsior
Mining Company to recover their
portion of the judgment given in the
famous debris cise by the Circuit
Court, was argued Monday morning
before Judge Sawyer by D. M. Delmas for the defendant, and Wm.
M. Stewart repregenting L. L. Robinson. Robinson, as President of
the ‘‘Miners Association,” paid the
whole amount of the judgment. Upon presenting the claim against the
Excelsior Company for $3,107, their
share, his demand was not honored,
and on the 15th instant a writ of attachment was issued against the delinquent company. Mr. Delmas read
a deposition of J. A. Bolles, superintendent of the Excelsior Mining
Company, in which it was claimed
that the company had paid various
sums, sufficient to counterbalance the
claim, of which no accounting had
‘been made. Mr. Stewart produced
au affidavit denying the former’s allegations, The matter was taken
under advisment by Judge Sawyer.

An Improved Ore Crusher.
In Utah there is an improved
crusher just out, an improvement
on Blake’s, that will crugh one ton
per hour so that it will go through a
forty-five screen, fine enough for
leeching, and probably for roasting
and amalgamating. The wearing
parts of this crusher can be furnished for $250 a year, and it is steadily
at work, These improvements
promise an immense reduction in
the cost of extracting the precious
metals; and consequently the rendering available of many ores heretofore worthless by reason of their
poverty.

EXPERTING PO TATOES.
What Symptoms to Look for in a
: Goed Irish Apple.
To distinguish a good from a bad
tention to ite outward appearance,
but divide it into two parts with a
sharp knife and examine the exposed
inner surfaces. If there isso much
water or juice that a slight pressure
would seemingly cause it to fall off
in drops, you may be sure that it
will be soggy after it is boiled, That
is evidence of a poor potato, and
don’t you buy it. The following are
the requistes of a good potato: When
cut in halves the color should be
yellowish-white; if it isa deep yellow it will not cook well, There
must be a considerable amount of
moisture, though not enough to collect in drops and fall off, even with
moderate pressure, Rub the two
pieces together, and ifit is good, a
white froth-will appear around the
edges and also upon the two suré
faces after they are separated. This
signifies the presence of a proper
quantity of starch, The more froth
then, the better the potato; while
the less there is the poorer it will
cook. The quantity of the starchy
element can be judged by the more
or less ready adherence of the two
parts. If the adherence is sufficient
for one piece to hold the other up,
the fact is evidence of a good article.
These are experiments usually made
by experts when buying potatoes, and
are the best that can be given short
of boiling; but even they are by no
means infallible.
