WEDNESDAY. MAY 3.
HONEST MINER STONE.
—__
The Bee of April 28th contained
nearly a column of bosh from the
pen of the Hon. Dr. C. E. Stone, exmayor of the city of Marysville, exminer of Long Bar (on the Yuba,
river in Yuba county), and now M.
D. of the city of Marysville. By
that article we are informed that the
said M. D. knows the ‘‘modus operandi” by which co-partners develop
and prospect mines; and it is very
evident that he not only knows how
the “wind” is sometimes raised, but
has “‘been there himeelf.” It is a
well known fact that this life’s battle has not been fought and won by
the gentleman by the use of his muscle as a_miner, for as a miner he was
beyond ‘a donbt a total failure. As
the Mayor of the city of Marysville,
and asa ‘leader to promote that
town’s industries.and its . prosperity,
he is also a failure. As a physiciun of
the city of Marysville, we wiil leave
that question tobe answered by the
Marysville and Loug Bar bone yards.
As to the articlein the Bee, Mr,
Stone would make it appear that
soie mountain men have used certain names for the purpose of selling
them out; but such is not the case,
asthe eight names (and there are
only eight in the location) are all
men residing in the Sacramento Valley. We do not think any of them
understand better than Mr. Stone
how the assessment dodge is played,
aud from the article published he
certainly has proved himself to be
an expert knowing how to become
the possessor of a mining claim with‘Out work or coin, and we hope he
may never return among as an hon.
est-miner. ,

STATE ELECTIONS.
The politicians will not be inactive
“this year, Elections take place in
twenty-three States, Oregon elects
State officers in June, Kentucky will
elect a Court of Appeals in August,
and inthe same month Tennessee
and Alabama will choose Governors
and Legislatures. Maine comes along
in September. She will elect a Governor and a Legislature which will
have the naming of a Senator to succeed Mr. Frye, who, it will be remembered, stepped into Mr. Blaine’s
vacant place in the Senate when he
became Secretary of State. In Octuber, Ohio and Iowa will fill some
of their minor offices. Coloyado will
provide herself with a Governor and
Legislature, and West Virginia will
-select-an -Assembly-which will choose”
a United States Senator to succeed
Davis. _1n November, Connecticut,
Delaware, Kansas, Massachusetts,
California, Michigan, Nebraska, Ne“vada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Caro'ina, Texas and New
York: wilt elect Governors, while
Illinois will vote on legislative candidates who will have the destiny of
Mr. David Davis as Senator in their
keeping. Both parties have plenty
‘of work before them, for on the issue
of the State contests will depend in
a great measure the struggle for the
Presideney.

IN UNION IS STRENGTH.
An effort should be made to hold
a convention in Nevada county this
month, or as soon as practicable, for
the purpose of adopting a programme
whereby our citizens may act in unison to the end that support be withdrawn from the Chinese in our
midst. ‘The alien horde has alre dy
lost its foothold along the ridge, and
there is no reason why other localities should Inger continue to encourage its presence. There is a
strong wave ‘of anti-Chinese sentiment setting in, and it is bound to
Sweep over the coast with tremen:
dous force this summer. There is
nothing that smacks of Kearneyism
in the reform. It is to be a calm
and decent effort to relieve ourselves,
and we should take hold of it with a
vim: that will ensure its success.
Every section of the county should
“he represented by intelligent and
clear-headed men who represent the
industry and intelligence of their
neighbors, The ba ] caunot be set
rolling too soon, :

A CROWN OF THORNS.
“Mare Bang’em” of Marysville is
not finding his throne cushioned with
velvct, as he probably imagined it
wouldbe. In truth, he has landed
in a hornet’s nest, and the longer he
‘stays there the more he smarts.
Hereis a bit of his. experience as
vouched for by the Report: At a
debris meeting held in Marysville
the Mayor was authorized to se'ect
§wenty prominent citizens to accom“pany the Supervisors to the Debris
Convention. As the adult male pop. ulation of ‘that Village is some sev—

A MASSIVE INDUSTRY.
{Chicago Mining Review.)
The fact that our mines have been
able to make such a profitable showing, even under tlie most unfavorable circumstances, with which they
have been compelled to contend, with
misdirected efforts and _ wasted
energies, proves conclusively that,
now as the true object of mining
-is beginning to be understood, the
result must be more sutisfactory;

before, the advantages and profits of
this massive and substential industry.
