distributed it throug h.t city, we
‘believé it would have i adopted.
to] But now, after reading i the people
are almost solid against the change,
as the vote will show on Monday
next. The strongest arguments that
are being used against the New Municipal Bill are the svctions referring
to the public schools, and the power
of the Board of Trustees to levy a
tax thirty cents higher than under
the present charter,or in other words
raising the mumfrom 70 cents,
as at present, to one @ollar. All of
the leading tax-payers are opposed to
it not only on this.ground; ‘but -they
think there are many other objecféabired th it, “They say if
the new bill is adopted there will be

Board, . It. is contended,.that under
the workings of the new lew onethird of the children now attending
the public schools of the city would
be compelled to quit unless the ,parents paid tuition. Nearly all of A
are’ children: of poor parents who
want them-educated but could not
afford to pay-in this manner for their

are regatded as the most objectionable, and will.doubtless be the means
of defeating the reorganization. ©

Memorial Day, which is a national
holiday, occurs, on Friday, the 30th
of May, and is always celebrated by
the Poste of the Grand Army of the
Republic by processions, orations,
and the decoration of the graves of
deceased soldiers who served in the
Union armies, The Union of yesterday says: At one time a Post of the
Grand Army was in existence in
Grass Valley, but owing to the removal of many of the members the
charter of the Post was finally surrendered, and no effort has since
been made torestablish one, At the
present time there are from eighteen
to twenty persons residing in Grass
Valley and Nevada City who were
formerly members in good stan ding
in the Grand Army of the Republic,
and as Memorial Day, approaches some
of them have been considering the
propriety of celebrating the day in
the usual manner. They have regeived information from Grand Commander Davies that ex-soldiers, not
now connected with a Post, but who
were in good standing in any Post to
Which they belonged which has eurrendered its charter, are entitled to
wear their badges in any procession
that may be held on Memorial Day.
It has therefore been decided to
take steps to have a procession on
that day, and observe the usual custom of decorating the graves of deceased soldiers, and to fire military
salutes over the same, and for the
purpose of consultation and making
necessary arrangements Capt. J. R.
Crocker has advised with other members of the Grand Army and a _meeting will be held at Justice Paynter’s
office Saturday evening at 7 o’clock
te which all ex-soldiers are respectfully invited.

Formatioa of Mineral Veins.
The time required for’ the formation of mineral veins appears to be
much less than has been generally
supposed. A ditch which was
filled up two years. ago with common clay containing iron has just
been opened again by Dr. Fleitman,
who has found, to his great surprise,
. that the clay has become white and
permeated by cracks filled with compack iron pyrites, these veins being
from a twenty-fifth tow sixth of an

Why They Differ.
As the Sacramento River rolled

‘What is it?” rippled Deer Creek,

the Sacramento.
“Give it up.”
