NEVADA CITY, CAL. LOCAL AFFAIRS. Arrested. A man named Tom Simmons was arrested at Washington, in this by Sheriff McCormick, of Placer county, as one of the two men who robbed the passengers and drivers uf the Nevada, Grass Valley and Colfax stages, on the Placer county side of Bear River, neur Colfax, a few weeks ago. Washington for a good while, and jz in the habit of going off very often fora few diyS'ata time, and always _ . taking bis gun_ with -him_to hunt. One of the passengers who was on the stage . at the.time of the tobbery, -believed-from the appearancecf the. robber, his size, form, etc., and the -fact that he. was not in Washington atthetime of the robbery; that:he must have been the man. It is evident, however, that he is greatly mistaken. The-examination was to have taken place at Anburw,. yesterday, and we understand that Sim~ toons will be able to pruve an_ alibi. Witnesses from this county haye gene to Auburn to testify that Sim mons was in the town of Eureka and ‘wns engaged with others in a sheoting contest on the day of the robbery, --and that o1 the aftern: on previous to the stage robbery he was on his} way to Eureka, and the day after the robbery he was at Emek?, and of. course it’ was impossible for him to have been at Bear River at the time of the robbery. If these statemeats are established, which doubtlessly they will be, the wrong man_ has been arrested and be -will be di -. charged. We did not intend to say anything about the arrest after buving heard the above __ explanation, but us the Grass Valley}. Union has mentioned the fact, we give the above particulars as we heard them, The Circus, Montgomery Queen’s Circus and Menagerie-will exhidit in this ctiy Monday, June 7th. The San Francisco Alta says: On Tuesday night the season of Montgomery Wneen’s Great Circus and Menagerie comes toaclose in our city.’ The all-toobrief number of performances of this very excellent aggregation of talent have been—marked—by the most brilliaut success. Cumplete in ‘every detail, inexhaustible in its novelties, of unvaryisg attractiveness, it will be many aday before San Francisco will again see such 4 splendid place of amusement. The reward from the public has been unstinted, and the three weeks of two performances daily, has wen the most remunerative returns in gold. The two greatest riders in the world, riding in'the same ring, is a spectacle that has been wituessed in no ether cirMr.Chas. Fish has been riding murvelously. well, while Mr, James Robinson has been excelling himself. Comparisons are drawn nightly between these two arenic artists, one being favored and thenthe other. Opinions are about equally divided. Miss Mollie Brown is.as handsomein form and feature as she is dating and gracefal in her riding. Without exaggeration, she may be set down as the hest female rider in the .world, even excelling Mademoiselle Kenebel in her palmiest days. Infact every artist that appears in Mr. Queen’s Circus is far above the standard of good. There is notene ef mediocrity in the whole establishmeur. The Menagerie has been augmented by theaddition of a new, elephant, ‘Princess Mollie,”’ the giraffe is stil) a wonder of. attractiveness, while everybody is pleased with the frolicsome ganibols of the baby lions, and curiosity is at all times excited by the numberless other animals.
