GRANT AND Cot¥ax.—The grand
et eveding was an event léng to
be @omembered in this county, and
fairly-opened the campaign im this
section of the State, the result of which
convené, crowds of efithustastie toyat
men came into the city from various
parts of the county, and added to those
of our own people, served to make up
an exciting scene seldom witnessed in
our midst: Flags were displayed at
prominent places, and the Theatre was
handsomely ¢¢@2orated. The Theatre
‘was densely crowded when the meeting
was called to order by A. H. Hanson:
Esq., Secretary of the County Central
Committee, and on motion S. D. Merchant, Eeq., was elected President of
the meeting. That gentleman came
forward and expressed his thanks for
the honor conferred. TT. B. Merry was
then chosen ‘Secretary. Eloquent
speeches'were next. made by Judge S.
W. Brockway, of Calaveras county,
Marcus D. Boruck, Esq., of San FranW. Robertsand others, all of which were
well received and enthusiastically applauded.
_. Dr, Harris was unavoidably absent,
bat the following letter from him was
read by the Secretary, and warmly received by the audience :
