It would be well for Na who cannot be present to commu. nicate their wishes by means of letters and petitions. Tom. ‘Mooney, of the. amoug them rhs ry fine frizzlers. An old farmer was inquiting of Mooney how he managed to got“them airchickens,” and Tom give him the directions as follows: “The next time~you set a hen, stick & pin into the little end of every egg; if they hatch, the chickens will come out wrong end to, and their feathers will all turn toward the head.” ~“‘Phose who want to try the experiment may do so with perfect’ confidence that ’ they will fail in getting a chicken. é An INTERESTING EventT—A RatLwhile traveling on the Central Pacific in company with her husband, gave birth to @ female child at Montella Station,'Nevada. Ini the beginning of the week two new cases were announced, and it hab yinee ec of ihe. tae the result as given by the alips of the Union, who was present: “We witnessed . six holes drilled, charged and fired in . the stopes at the Empire mine on Friday last with the following results :— With single handed working, with a bit of 7:8 of an inch, a hole 26 inches deep was put down, chatged and fired in 90 minutes. This hole was located on the upper <portion of the stope, two feet from the ‘corner of the drift. The drill was inclined with the stope of the ledge, and at an angle of about 22 degrees towards-the body of the rock.— The character of the rock was wha, would be called by miners ‘easy ground” and good working rock. The . result of the explosion was 64 cubic feet . of rock thrown out and loosened. The bottom of the holé was “cliambered,” and the rock was shattered and torn 7] two feet inward-and-downward,so that it was worked out easily with the pick in all directions. Four other shots were then fired, but they had little to do, but did that well, Those four shits were put in merely for the purpose of making room and places for heavier blasts. The most effective—the sixth shot— was ina holé 29 inclies deep and in about the middle of the stone. It was drilled single handed, charged and fired in-one hour and thirty-five minutes.— The rock was tough and close grained trap, with the ledge underlyingit. We never saw a hole put in similar rock _. more quickly by two men than this was by oneman. The rock was bound on top and bottom, and a miner would not consider that the hole had a fair. show. We agreed that this should be a test. The charge was a heavy one, the cartridge weighing, paper and all, 5} ounces, and was worth isfactory—the explosion chambering the hole, shattering the rock, as before, on every side, Black powder would not have produced the same effect. A similar hole putin by double hands would have cost more than twice as = io ek the =, > + much.-Fhey found that no-deleterious . results followed to those who were in the mine from the gases, and that no one experienced any sensation of headache or nausea. : News Items.—The following we get from the Union of yesterday : The -President-instructs Rosecrans that the country desires no more territory, where money is tobe taken from the Treasury to pay for it. Rosecrans had. been negotiating for the purchase of Northern States of Mexico for $3,000,000. AccIDENT.—Henry Bassett, of Grass Valley, while hunting in the vicinity of that place,on Friday last, says the National, met with a painful accident} He accidentally discharged his rifle while holding it in such a position that the bullet passed through one of his. toes.
