Francisco — is:}.« ne Reise ene laien: A Murder to ' to Order. “A Dublin dispatch « ‘of Wedifesday . says ; Patrick Delaney and Thomas: Caffeey, two more of the men charged with participation in the murders of Cavendish and Burke, were arraigned for trial this morning. They created a sensation in the Court-room by pleading guilty to the charges against them. Both were sentenced to be hanged on the 2d of June. Before Caffrey pleaded guilty he was informed that the Crown gave no hopes of » mitigation of the death sentence which would be paseed upon him, When Delaney was called he pleaded guilty, He said: ‘I was brought into this at first foolishly, not knowiug what it was. I was forced from my work to go to the Park, We hod to obey the orders of the Society or take the consequences, When I got in the Park I could not get away. I saw the muzders but took no part in them, The murders were committed by Joe Brady and Timothy Kelly, and nobody else.” When Caffrey was placed in the dock his face wore smiles. The consequence of pleading guilty was again fully explained to. him in open Court, but he persisted in his plea. On being asked if he had any thing to say why sentence should said : ‘All I have got to soy, standing on the brink ‘of the grave, is that I did not know what was going to happen antil'ten minutes before the murders were committed. I was bound to go to the Park under pain of deatlr. ” a Sana, aed Secretary Lincoun’s decision that Catholics shall not have a chapel at the San Francisco Presidio military headquarters has created a bitter feeling in Roman Catholic circles. They say four-fifths of the soldiers and.many of the officers are Roman Catholics, and that no provision has ever been made to afford them an opportunity for worship. Gen, Scofield, commanding the Pacific coast, recommended the matter to Secretary Lincoln, believing that proper facilities for public worship would tend-to improve the-discipline of the ‘post; have’ been held in an unused barrackroom, The Catholics claim that Secretary Lincoln’s reason that no church edifice should exist on a Government reservation is a quibbling excuse for an ungracious act. 2.
