A Grass Valley Young Lady Surrenders to the Enemy—And is ‘“‘Bounced”’ by Her Chums a ‘La ¥.M. 8. C. : Ifthe members of the Young Men’s_ Social. Club at this city flatter themselves that they are; monopolists in. the . ,antimatrimonial business, they are making a “mighty big mistake, Some charming young ladies of Grass Valley have borrowed their invention and are working it for all it is worth,as the following from yesterday’s Union discloses; ‘‘On Monday there was a gathering of young ladies, intimate friends of Miss Ida Hill, at the residence of Wm. K. Spencer, the purpose of whom it was to read out of the Young Ladies Social Club Miss Ida Hill, who has so far forgotten the law of the Club as to intend taking upon herself a better half. She is to be married thisevening to David McKay. The young ladies were given the fréedom of the house, and even would not allow Mr. Spencer toenter the room in which the reading out took place. _ The. following named young ladies conducted the affair: Miss Ellen Crauthers, of Martinez, Misses Nellie Duffy, Sadie Johnston, Mamie Bosworth, Jessie Ridge, Minnie Bethell, and Annie Spencer, of Grass Valley. After Miss Hill was duly expelled” from the Club, a sumptuous banquet was tendered to her, and the evening was passed in a very pleasant manner. Miss Annie Spencer presented each young lady with a beautiful satin badge, containing an appropriate motto and design. The designs were really works of art, and were painted by the. giver. Each young lady responded to the motto on the badge presented her, which caused much merriment. Itisramored that some of the young ladies present wall soon have to go. through the ordeal of being also read out of the Club, and judging from their persOnal attractions and excellent qualities they ought to commit the unpardonable offense of walking in the way of their fair companionand getting the walkout papers they have just served upon. their erring sister.’’ Making It Warm for Them. The roughs and toughs, both male and female, who have so long infested this city, are being hard pressed by the peace officers just now, and their thievish and peace disturbing propensities are getting some of them into very serious trouble. It is a burning shame, for a town making pretensions to respectability, to have the lowest kind of bawdy houses flourish without restriction on some of its most public thoroughfares, where good women~andyoung children are compelled to.pass daily, and we do hope that when the numerous vagrants and thieves who abound have been disposed of, the arm.of. the -law.-will reach out and. gather in these dens of infamy. : Still Holds the Fort. Mr. Nickerson’s 3,000 sheep continue to graze undisturbed at Round mountain three-or four miles above this city, despite the written notice given him by the residents of that section to leave within twenty-four hours. When . the delegation appointed to convey to him the invitation to make himself scarce paid their respects to the.gentleman from Yuba county, he bristled up and nailed his flag to the mast, defying them to tear it down. He said the grass and water and air his flocks were ‘feeding on belonged to him just as much as they did to anybody, and he was there to stay until he got ready to go. The committee retired in good order. A Good. Team. ~M& Nevada City young man is making a lot of Kensington embroidery that he will display at the district fair next September. His sweetheart is whittling~out w wooden model of a full plant of quartz mining works, including crushing, hoisting and pumping machinery, and she expects it will knock silly all other exhibits in that line. . ——__—_».
