Lenhart, whom all old s« ttlers wiil remember and-of whom, none knew anythiag but good: ‘Again we are called upon to chronicle the death of a pioneer, a duty which bas deyolved on us but too frequent of late. At about 7. o'clock last George W. The Appropriation Committee Only awaits the revised vstimates of the Secretary of War, that favor having been asked by Secretary Taft. The Sundry Civil bill, which is necessarily the last appropriation bill prepured, and usually known as the Omnibus bill, ie well advanced. A dead lock in the Senate must be taken into con sideration, but if the Senate behaves itself there is ve reason why Con. gress should not adjourn by the wid~ die of J une. Bue Daily Senet evebin t salt quarrel . At the moment of-his dissolution bis) Bat . jailer daring the late Sheriff Emery’s . . [Commiunicated.} ; oo Education and Public [ Liberty. In England théthree-féld power of ~ . king-eraft, shurch-craft and fendal =. lords con.bimed to’ crush the ‘old Saxon liberty. They well succeeded, and for five bundred yeurs the bodies and souls of the common people-were influence. After having reduced the people to-a state of serfdom, and trauipled thé rights of conscience under foot,.this band of triune oppressors (each of whom, by the way, claimed a—“divine right" dominste over mankind * began to smmong tiemselves. This. wus_the peeple's opportunity, aud an ilastration of the proverb-“when . rogues ctilese: honest men ‘will get Thus, when. the nokles and the chureh contended against . In other countries, too, the conflict between the church and . the monarchy led to the destruction of many of the oppressions.of the . former; ,. particularly that inhuman . system of tortue known as the in-. . quisifion, = \ Let no one suppose tliat the spirit . of churchism is “changed, © It still . pants for power, It will seeure it by hook-er—erook; it -will-seek-to . control all the social, intellectual and political ‘affsirs of men. Eastern States ‘it fights against the reasonable taxution of church prop. erty and the expulsion of sectarian books in the public schools; ‘in New York another: form of it leaugeed it\self with a corrupt political ring in -order to endow sectarian institutions and. huge churches with its ill-gotten andaciously attempts to resume its long-lost power. by cursing and abusing all who should patronize that .§ree-education which’ issure.death. to: its power; in California ityet contents itself by thanting the supeior (7) advantages of its cheap sectarian seminaries aud so-caNed colleges, over the free schools. The same spirit is manifest. everwhere. In Ewgland ehurchism refuses to submit tesecular education; in Spain it threatens to excommunicate the King for permitting liberty of worship to his people; in Italy it intrigues-to, prevent the education of the young; in France‘it remains true to the cause of Napoleon-against the Republic; in Mexico it is\ successfully fomenting a revolution against . law-and liberty, and-so on, How can it be otherwise? The . spirit of. churchism is as much opposed to free thought to-day as it was ten centuries since, It still shows its teeth in its rancor-against all who dare assert that any of°its many absurd interpretatations of the Bible are erroneous, It can not now imprison Gullileo, but it/ can abuse Tyndall;it can not torture a Servetus but it can shamefully sbuse Bushnell;. it ean mot learn a Huss, but it ean howl heretict heretic! after a deBlue Laws,-but it can ‘preach intolerance; it cannot stop public education, but it cau eontaminute the minds of the young by its fanaticism, It is wonderful, 4o observe how nearly all the great’ thinkers of the age, while themselves devoted christians, steadfastly refuse to range themselves under the banner of ehurchism. Spencer, Tyndall, Darwin, Haxley, Emerson, Carlyle, host of others in-the very front rauk, all remain outside of. church-fellowship. In-the political world of reformers, the result is yet more striking, seeming to indicate that as Revolution, all the ‘“‘pastors’’ of England, turned tories and fled tw churchism cannot be reconciled, All the great Republican leaders of Europe’are hostile te the pretensions ef churchism and are under the ban of the church party: Bradlaugh and Dike in England, Hugo and Blane in France, Garrabaldi in Italy, Castlear in Spain, are afew of such representative names. Churchism with its extravagant ideas on blindly taking the dugmas second-handed, -asking no quéstions—bow can it be otherwise! What then does it amount to. after all? Where is its boastecssuperiority and Christliness?’ In i#srelation to liberty its pretensions appeared to me, to be inconsistent with American ideas. ipgenerally claims that the . people exist for the church -and not the ehurch for the people, and seems to think that.it has adivine right to this supremacy.
