THE DAITY TRANSCRIPT NEVADA UITY, CAL. Established in 1860. é -—Oo— BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. Nevada Cnty Ofil Pre SUNDAY. MAY 7. THE ANTI-DERRIS CONVENTION. This convention, lately in session at Sacramento, is not likely to be productive of much good if the sentimenteuttered by the speakers represent the feelings of the valley people. Both their speeches and the resolutions_express nothing but blind hostility to the mining interests. In fact, that body might be compared to a Spanish ‘‘torro”’ ir-ritated at the sight of a very small red hankerchief. He shuts his eyes, bellows frightfully, paws the earth and finally charges upon the fence of his corral and retires with a sore head. This is likely to be the result of the convention unless more moderate counsels prevail, It will be observed that the tenor of the resolutions point to more litigation and all remedial measures are ignored. We fail too see any resolution endorsing Col. Mendell’s ‘recommendation, or. supporting our delegates in Congress, in asking Government aid to protect our river channels; neither do we find a resolution acting upon the recommeda« tions of blackmail. tion. of the Board of Trade, of San Francisco, suggesting a conference of parties representing the two interests, The disclamer of any intention tointerfere with quartz and drift mines is very ingenious, and is intended as “a sop to Cerebus.” While itis apparent that no immediate hostility is contemplated against that class of miners, it is evident that they are only reserved to be devoured last. Any legislation or any legal decision adverse ‘to the right to mine by the hydraulic process must necessarily be fatal to all mines putting muddy water in ‘the streams, and renders such companies liable to extortion and blackmail, Mines of that class are sometimes the subjectof negotiations for sale of their ground. How easy it is to bring a suit or procure one to be brought bysome Attorney-General or Board of Supervisors, and thereby cloud atitle. We know of one instance where these tactics have been pursued and a company heavily blackmailed under the threat to de: feat a sale. We do not believe that the present convention would sanction such proceedings, but on their adjournment their affairs are likely to be managed by a ring who have already shown their hands, if we may credit an article in the Alta California of May 5th. We submitt that the proceedings of the Convention look like-the --development of an immense legal bonanza with some stringers {and indicaTHE MINERS CONVENTION. The suggestion made by the Transcript that the miners of the State hold a convention at an early date is very apt to be acted upon, The Grass Valley Union says the miners could by holding sucha convention, “bring the whole matter before the people in its true light, and let the voters of San Francisco and other large cities know just how the matter stands; also pass contra resolutions to those adopted by the farmers who are trying to ruin so great an interest in the State as that f hydraulic mining, which is far more valuable than twenty times the land it basin the least damaged. As the matter now stands the hydraulic miners have certainly been miarepresented tothe people of the State of California,” TMU, AER eS THE LATEST NEWS. Parnell, Dillon and and O’Kelly have arrived in London. There is ho cessation of the antiJewish disturbances in Russia. The rumor of ah outbreak of the Bannocks and Shoshones is discredited at army headquarters. The latest intelligence is to the _ effect that the De Long pirty have been found—they were all dead. ee % ries Canada Johu-Charlebers and two children broke through the ice at Ottawa, te 1» Wednesday, and were drownJoba Davidson aged 32, killed his mother, 60 years of age, at Philadel~ phia, Thursday, by crushing her skull with a hatchet, oA ‘Washington. special says it is reported again that Minister Lowell has been 1 Tecalled, and that his successor has been selected: : The valuation of all property within the city limits of Seattle, W. a . is given by'the Assessor as $3,958 720—an increase of 150 per cent pees last. year. England will co-operate with othtnations in the establishing of a of cireumpolar magnetic and observatories. Fort is the station . lion. ~The water is now -so-muddy e. Fresh miloh cows for sale at Sut THE ANTI-MINERS. The Alta says of the late anti-mifers convention at Sacramento: In spite of ample advertising, it seems to have been a failure. The speakers complain of the indifference and apathy of ‘the Sacramento people. According to the Record-Union the entire attendance was only 185 persons, and “‘exceedingly few business men of the city were present—a fact that was commented upon.” The truth is, that the intelligence and property interests of Sacramento are opposed to the action taken by the Board of Supervisors of thecounty in bringing suits against the mines, and in paying exorbitant fees to one particular lawyer. The last Grand Jury of the county commented in the most severe terms upon this action of the Supervisoral ring, for, according to current report, this favored lawyer did not keep all his huge fee to himself, and there were hopes besides that the miners would pay. $10,000 cash rather than have suits instituted against them. We understand that the miners were told that even less than $10,000 would secure them immunity. However, the iminers would not pay blackmail, and hence these honest men of Sacramento must limit their pickings to the pockets of their own county, The resolutions adopted by this Convention state that 100,000 acres of valley land have been destroyed by slickens, The real facts are that about 50,000 acres have been injured —not destroyed—all of which in time can be brought back to its old agricultural value. Assuming, however; this statement tobe true, and that each acre was worth $60, we have a total loss, as-the result of mining for the past thirty-four years, of $6,000,000. During this period the product of gold has been about $1,200,000,000, or 200 times the amount of damage inflicted. The annual output of the California mines is now about $20,000,000, or three times the agricultural loss since 1848. The resolutions say nothing whatever about the permanent stone dams proposed by Colonel Mendell in his lagt report to Congress. Their spirit is simply one of hostility to the mining industry, and a desire to ruin instead of to cure, These few farmers of Sutter and Yuba counties seem to think that they can control the politics of the State, and they make ‘slickens the main issue in the coming political campaign. They apparently forget that there are fifteen counties in the State, with an aggregate population of 130,000 souls, where mining is by far the leading industry ; and that the voters in these mining counties may have something to say ‘when election comes on, providing either of the political parties should be foolish enough to make hostility to the mines » plank in its platform. We notice that nothing is said, either in the resolutions or speeches, about the injury to physical health caused by the wicked miners. A far more serious--charge,; however, —is made against these enemies of the Commonwealth, and that is, that they are injuring the cause of religthat baptism has been abandoned, and the people in the slickens region are short of ca$h with. which to properly pay the preachers of the Gospel. Hence, many valuable souls are in much danger of going to that place unmentiontoble ears polite. Wicked Rome. An article recently-appeared inthe TRANSCRIPT speaking of Mlle. Nevada’s engagement at Rome, wherein occurred this passage: ‘‘Her vocalization is wonderful; her trills, her smoryature, her picchellati are perfect.” To this—the Daily Exchange adds: ‘‘Now, this is really too much, We hesitate about mentioning a lady ’s smoryature in polite society, but her picchellati—oh, shame! Why, every good Christian knows it isa sin-even to think about sucha thing; but to put it in print—well, Rome is a deuce of a place for loose morals.” oe Got Cleaned Out. The Virginia City Enterprise has found an old Comstocker who in er. ly days ‘‘carried a three-bushe -bag of fifty dollar octagonal slugs from Scotchmen’s creek up the mountain to Alpha, Nevada county, where a tremendous monte game wasin progress, .When he finally. deserted the game he had to make a breech-clout of the bag in order to get back to the diggings in presentable shape.” Aw Oregon mar fell on the icy walk and broke his nose, and when he came to sue~for damages the jury held that. his looks had been improved 30 per cent. No matter how degraded and deeply stained in crime aman may be, he generally sses at least one good trait. ” NOT BAD, CONSIDERING, . —* Qilarysville Appeal) The Transerirt styles the Sacra mento auti-debris convention a ‘grand pow-wow.” Well, we are all ‘“‘Diggers.” We have been digging from under hydraulic mining debris for the past ten years. PRACTILR WHAT YOU PREACH. : (Record-Union.) “Virtue has many preachers but few martyrs.” It was illustrated here recently when at a mass meet ing, called to promote an ulleged virtuous cause that calls for some self-sacrifice, but 100 persons attended. A SURE THING, (8. F. Daily Report.) Nevada county is the only locality in the State that has thus far had the courage to deal properly with the invading Chinese, In Nevada City they moved the Chinatown outside the city limits, and throughout the county a peaceful agitation has, with the exception of one hydraulic enterprise, driven the pigtails out of th» mines. Now it is propused to boycott the heathen, and it’s a sure thing that the method will succeed. GIVE HER AYOTHER CHANCE; (San Jose Mercury.) It does not become a Christian community to place its hell of crushing condemnation upon an erring and foolish young girl, who, through the’ duplicity of some man who should have been her guide, protector and friend, may have brought upon her life unutterable woe. Give her another chance, say we, and we but echo the teachings of one whose heart was over overflowed with tender sympathy for the erring penitent. Insuch cases as that which is now the theme of many tongues in this community, woman usually sins through her love nature, which, when not perverted, is the crowning glory of her life—man sins generally through his baseness and perfidy, BORN.
