THURSDAY, MAY 8, 1884. JUST THE MON. . «Hon, E. F. Spence, of the First “National Bank of Los Angeles, is being spoken of in influential Republiean circles for Congress in the Sixth district, As against a weak Democratic nominee Mr. Spence would make a good run,—San Jose Herald. And wouldn’t he make ‘‘a good ran,” and a successful one, against _ the best man youcan trot out ?—Los ‘Angeles Times, "Mr, Spence would be a popular gandidate in this section, where he is well and most favorably known. A clear-headed, true-hearted business man for Congress, occasionally, would be a diversion that the people could not help but be pleased with. —San Jose Mercury. Mr. Spence was for a long time a _ peaident of Nevada City, where he still has hundreds of friends. He is a first-class man in every respect, and if the people of the Sixth District know what is best for them they will make him their next Congreasman, If Nevada county ,had its say about his candidacy he would get a solid vote. EEE A-Gueman chemist says he can freeze a man solid, depriving him of all appearance of vitality, and at any time thaw him out in good condition. The Fresno Republican thinks it would be a good idea for the Democracy to have old Mr. Tilden operated on, before he quite gives up the ghost. He could be congealed during the campaign, and be thawed out in time for inauguration, after which he might kick the bucket without any serious conse quences to the party. It might be a little difficult for the Democracy to warm up the fight for a frozen candidate, but if he left the barrel open, that might offset the frigidity of the candidate. : 2e-Tux second generation of the Clays may retrieve the prestige which the first after the ‘Great’ Commoner” failed to maintaid:”’A’grandson of the peerless Kentucky orator promises to take high rank in the same line of genius. He will probably represent Louisville in the next Congress; he is » namesake of the Whig leader, ‘gallant Harry of the West.” O’Hara, colored Congressman from the second district of North Carolina, isa graduate of Harvard, and says cawn’t for can’t and ither for either. He lives in good style a of his (O’Hara’s) four children. 4 ——.e< Tue first. line of telegraph was erected less than forty years ago, and now over one million miles are in operation. According to Prescott, Prince Atahualpa, when made a prisoner, had collected for his ransom $3,000,000 in gold and 25,705 pounds of silver. From 1684 to 1827 the great silver mines at Pasco in South America, sinelted 4,967,710 pounds troy, and the mines of. The grand Potosi, of Bolivie, was discovered in 1542; since then it has produced $24,000,000 worth of silver. Humboldt says the mines of Mexico yielded between the conquest and 1805 $2,027,952,000. . j . _>Going Prepared. “Well, dear,” remarked Mrs, Smith, as her husband started out “Tt is, indeed,” his wife said ; “and by the way, here is your pockef-book lying on the table.
