The San Francisco Bulletin lately
published. .an article, showing the
amounts of banking capital and depos~
ites of San Francisco and Chicago, and.
attempted to draw a favorabie’compariseh in favor of the-former city, for the.
reason that it had almost twice the
capital in that-business that Chicago
. has. The showing made is, of itself,
the strongest evidence that could -beq
desired-to prove that Chicago is in advance of San Francisco in business prosperity.—Stockton Independent.
‘The Independent is right. Hoarded
capital is not wealth, and the fact that
Chicago with less capital does more
business than San Francisco shows that
the enterprise of citizensof the former
place is greater than that of San Francisco,.The miser may gloat over his
millions in money hoarded away, while.
his neighbor with his few thousands is
doing a business equal to ten.times
his capital and adding so much wealth
to the country in which he lives.—
San Francisco has entirely too much
capital in the hands of the few, who
employ it not for development, but to
draw from the profits of those who
are laboring to. build up business.
Heavy capitalists of that city stand behind their millions of money and lazily
wait until businéss necessities compel
their more industrious neighbors to call
on them for aid, They then help only
an condition of being permitted to draw
the “life blood” from enterprise in the
Shape of usurious rates of interest,
Money as a rule is held until it can be
° multiplied at the rate of two or two
anda half per cent. per month, by the
labor and . industry of somebody else
besides the holder, San Francisco has
more capital and less enterprise in development than probably any city aspiring to become a commercial center,
in the world, Chicago, with her small
capital, is sending ‘agents of trade within sight of San Francisco, while the
wealthy men of the latter place are
ranning Mercantile Library raffles ;
speculating in stocks or endeavoring
to “bulland bear” the grain market.
Chicago capital is invested for the purpose of drawing tribute by trade from
all parts of the country, while San
Francisco capital is employed in playing a heavy game of “freeze out”
among its <itizeas. Money is simply
“an agent, when properly used for creat.
iog wealth. and if employed in manufacture, commerce, agriculture or mining it is creating. Money used in speculating is only accumulating in the
hands of the few, without adding'a partitle to the wealth of the country.
Money properly used is a blessing to
any people, but when it is only used
to epable the holders of the largest pile
to absorb all around then, then itis a
curse. The boast of the Bulletin is only an evidence of a waut of wisdom on
the part of business managers in San
Francisco. They should give their capital an opportunity by prudent investment in industry, and it, would, instead
of depressing business, increase it, Every dollar added to the wealth of any
part of the State is a benefit to San
Francisee, That city would flourish .
upon the prosperity of the interior, and
that prosperity would bea fixed fact if
capital were legitimately employed by
" Dbasiness. men. .

It is reported that the ticket which
takes the hundred thousand dollars iz
held by a man who resides at Colusa.
The drawing ended at half-psst elevén o’clock. All the ,winning numbers
will be found in. the above list.
It is pretty certain the $50,000 has
been won by some in this city, besides
a number of the other prizes. Mrs A.
W. Lester won $100; Mrs. N. P. Brown
$750.
We have taken the utmost pains to
give our readers a correct list of the
drawn Nos. still there may be some
telegraphic or typographical errors in
some of the small prizes.
The Target Excursion.
We gave a list of the winners of
prizes at the target shooting of the
Light Guard in our last issue, but the
affair deserves a fuller notice. The
company turned out to the number of
42, rank and. file, and marched to Mulloy’s. ground, preceded by Carter's
brass band. The priges were twenty
in number, consisting of a fine lamb,
16 turkeys, a ham, presented by James
Colley, “One hundred Years Progress
of America,” presented by Dr, R. M.
Hunt, and “The Wealth of Califoriia,”
presented by E. M. Prestoa. Besides
these prizes, there was a pony purse of
$20 for the best single shot, only those
who put in 50 cents being included.
The shooting was not near so good as
the Company has done. The best
string of three shots, 27 9-16, was made
by J. M. Rienberger, who won the
lamb and pulled it in a small cart at
the head of the Company. The next
best string of three shots was made by
H. R. McCoy, 29 9-16; 3d, James Hack.
Jey, 38 3-16; 4th, by marker A. L. Lancaster, 36 2-16; 5th, J. Rich, 40 8-16 ;
6th, Alex. Gault, 42 13-16; 7th, J. F,
. Carr, 48 15-16; 8th, George Loring,
62 4-16. The best string of two shots
was made by A. J, Ragan, 5 4-16; 2d,
Julius Barker, 8 1-16 ; 3d, Chas. Mulloy,
20 5-16 ; 4th, N. Bailey, 20 14-16 ; 5th,
S. Gilmore, 22 816; 6th, E. D. Dean,
22 11-16; 7th, John Rapp, 23 6-16 ; 8tb,
30 13-16; 10th, E, H, Moore, 82; 11th,
Jas. Murchie, 32 3-16; 12th, Wells
man, 33 4-16th. The best single
was made by George Shurtleff, whe
pierced the bull’s eye, and the pony
purse was won by Silas Gilmore, his
shot being 3-8ths from the center; and
the second best single shot. The winners brought the prizes in strapped to
their backs. “The excursion was a very
p easant one, and the Company acquitted themselves creditably in the drill.
The commissioned officers didn’t pack
any turkey on the home march.
