focAL AFFAIRS,
The North Bioomfleld Gravel. Min;
, ing Company.
During the past year ‘the North
Bloomfield Gravel Mining Co. has
extended its enterprises until now they
employ 450 men,’ and they expect
soon toadd considerably tothis force,
forthe purpose of extending their
ditch down into Bridgeport township.
The operations of this company extend from Bowman's dam to. Lake . "
City, and they have given. hfe and .
mergy, more or less, to the business .
of every mining camp within the
range of their operations. ‘They ncw
pave 150. men employed ‘at Bowman’s, and the dam-will, itis expect
ed, be completed in two weeks.— .
Their ditch conveys water from this
dam to the township of Bloonifield.
The must important work of the
company now is the bed rock tunnel, -~ ~
which is to open the basin or channel at Bloomfield. This channel
was opened to the bed rock 208 feet,
and found to contain pay gravel from
the surface down. The eompany
having ascertained this determined to
run a bed rock tunnel from Humbug
ranyon to their claims, that sufficient
all might be obtained to work to admatage. The surveys were made by
familton Smith, Superintendent of
he company, and the work comsenced about the first of last May.
Ye have recently passed over the
ine of works, and a description will
le interesting to our readers. The
unnel will, when completed, be 8,000
tet in length. The mouth of the
mnnel is 440 feet lower than the
hannel, and will, at the upper end,
w about 75 feet lower than the gravd, A road was built by the company
hiong the line of the tanneland eight
oisting works put up, numbered
_ from one to eight inclusive, coming
rom the mouth of the tunnel, ‘They
ite all builton the same plan, and
re ran by hurdy gurdy wheels. The
power is supplied from the éompay's reservoir, through 10,000 feet of
iron pipe. The shafts are double
and sunk diagonally with the line of
unnel, in order to give the greatest
possible width for working on the
ves Where thé shafts are completed.
he works are about 900 feet apart, .
nd in all of them they are now sink'g, and at the same time running
be tunnel from the mouth.
No, 8is ig on the rim rock of the
lannel, and No. 1 the nearest to
‘aes mouth. As we said deB, work was commenced in Ma
ady has been sccompliah

ust be completed before the line
work upon the tunnel will be
piched. When this is done, the
nnel will be run from both faces in
h shaft, and also continue work
the tunnel, It is expected that
bv entire work will be completed in
h Spring of 1875. This is to-day
wot the most extenvive mining optons on the coast, and all the
ork is being done systematically
hakhoroughly. The channel to be
‘dis rich, and the bed. rock has

ais company deserves credit for its
lerprise,, and: we hope that the
ghest anticipations of its managers
y be more than realized.

Pernicious Purgatives.
The brillant idea of half-e-century ago
. that the weak and siling could be bled,
blistered and salivated into g condition of
health and vigor is happily expleded; but
violent and prolonged purgation ‘is still,
to some extent, in vogue. We hava imposters who are daring enough -to offer to the
